September Song | Jimmy Durante | 1955

I could do without the choral woo-ooo-ooohs, but aside from that, I really like this version of the Kurt Weill/Maxwell Anderson chestnut.

Yes for a long time, even up to the time of Tom Waits, record company people were very nervous about a plain dry scratchy voice like this, had to pile on the strings and the woo woo girls. Of course, all the poignancy and feeling of the song comes from Durante’s clipped, plain phrasing.

Strings and woo-woo have undercut so many fine recorded performances. You just have to activate your internal woo-woo masking device and really listen, don’t you?

Nervous laughter following “watch the late, late, late . . . late . . . show”.

I have to say. This piece, September…1955. That’s the month and year I was born. Have to say the lyrics ring. Let’s get busy, y’all. None of us have a minute to waste.
