tattered and handled
Holding — and smelling — the tattered and handled copy of Lolita Amy specifically requested I buy for her from Half-Price Books, she said: I like this. It smells like glue and man.

I got a copy at the used books store as well, and it also had a glue smell–but the odor resulted from its being an edition annotated by Alfred Appel. At least the notes appear at the end of the book, but the man seemed to think that everything needed to be explained. I kept thinking that a person who needed such notes would not be likely to want to read Lolita, or at least wouldn’t finish it. The edition does have a nice little essay by Nabokov himself titled “On a Book Entitiled Lolita.”
