Dear Clusterflock: Do you swallow?

. . . . or do you spit? I mean when it comes to fruit stones, olives, etc?

Every since I can remember I have swallowed and still do – if I feel I can swallow it, I’ll swallow it. I remember as a kid wanting so desperately to swallow a peach stone – I had pretty much accomplished all sizes up to the peach. There were occasions when I was on the brink of trying it, but I always pulled back. I guess it was the roughness that scared me – the size always seemed manageable. Of course I gave no thought to passing it the other end. Even to this day when I eat a peach there is a sense of failure and I always have that thought, could I?

Spit. I hold many amateur records for distance.

    Gentlemen don’t spit.

Oh wait, you’re talking about fruit. I don’t eat many pitted fruits, but mostly I spit.

As a general rule, once it is in my mouth, there it remains until such time as swallowing is right and proper. If that involves a bit of roughage along with the pulp, so be it. I have long associated spitting with people who set coffee cans on the floor alongside their chairs, but that may be a peculiarly American association.

I do admire accomplished projectile spitting.

Phil, whenever I think of the fabled Allman Brothers album, I will think of you.

And take heart with respect to your peachy aspirations. It is through stretching our imagined capacities that we grow.

I try not to swallow anything that could later present a problem passing.

    Like a peach pit.

    oh.my.god.

I am making a peach-and-cherry martini cobbler tomorrow from some lovely white-fleshed peaches…the aroma of the fruit is already heady. The flaky crust is made from iced vodka; hence the name.

However, a caveat: “The inadvertent ingestion of fruit pits is always attended by the possibility of mechanical ileus, although in most instances, unless the pit be extremely large, viz-a-vis, a peach stone, or the subject a child, progression through the intestinal tract is prompt and asymptomatic. (see http://archsurg.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/summary/72/3/411)

Therefore, I shall “omit” rather than spit.

Danny, Danny, Danny, oh Danny, I am 100% certain I would incur no discomfort passing a peach-and-cherry martini cobbler, so now I must have an opportunity to swallow one. You will share that recipe, won’t you?

I would like to add that I have never tried to swallow a peach stone, I have just been on the brink several times – not for a few years but a peach stone in my mouth always gives me those thoughts.

Danny, you have me salivating here, which given my age passes for dementia! I’d love the recipe for that as well, or do I have do fly over there to sample?

Kathy – I may take on board your policy of not swallowing anything that later may cause problems. I really do need to think before I swallow.

Rick has promised to document the process from peeling to pitting, from cutting to incorporating, from macerating to rolling, from baking to eating; after which, I will be happy to share the recipe and such. Look for updates tomorrow…xod

Danny, we don’t need all that personal stuff. Just tell us how to make the cobbler.

No personal stuff – got it. You’ll still have to wait ’til tomorrow. I’m not totally sure what the recipe will be!
