If the events of 1974

made it strikingly obvious, perhaps for the first time in American history, that the President is not above the law, I suppose we have to assume now that we are (re-)establishing the opposite principle. Or will the Obama administration finally take a stand?

I have sure wondered about this too, Coop. One theory I have is that Obama is having to walk a fine line with respect to domestic rebellion. A very small percentage of the population can do lots of damage, and I wonder if he worries that the definite appearance of a purge of the prior party might push the nut cases into action. In my view–even if that is a possibility doing nothing is itself ultimately reprehensible. Standing up for the rule of law is never easy when it’s the powerful who are breaking it, but don’t stand up for it and bad times will soon begin to look like the good old days.
