Y’all?
I’m drunk, for the first time since clusterflockstock. I’m watching a show on tv about a man who is 8 feet tall.
Please say things to amuse me.

Do Programmers Still Buy Printed Books?
Antonio Cangiano says he does and plots out his reasons:
Likewise, when I’m holding a book or have it open on my desk, I’m in “book reading mode”, which makes it far easier to immerse myself in it. This means that I’m focused on the task and can proceed quickly. The only context switch that happens is between the book and the editor/shell, if it’s the kind of book that warrants typing along. If you are reading a book in a browser tab, it’s very easy to think, “I’ll just check my email for a second”, or introduce similar distractions. I’m sure I’m not alone in this respect.
When I buy a physical copy of a book, I feel psychologically more obliged to at least try to get through it. Online I experience a paradox of choice of sort. With hundreds of interesting books available there in front of me, I’m more inclined to excessively multitask, and end up checking out different books while I should still be reading the current one.
All Modern Giveaway!
Clusterflock and All Modern have teamed up for a giveaway, and All Modern will be providing the winner of this giveaway any single item priced at or below $100 shipped to you for free.
Clusterflock loves good design. The folks at All Modern have a handle on good modern design, featuring a multitude of items from Herman Miller, Alessi, DwellStudio, Knoll and many more.
I and a few other ‘flockers have spent a great deal of time poring over the site, and they have everything from home goods, kitchen gadgets, bedroom linens, gorgeous clocks, modern furniture and a thousand other things to make your house feel more like your home. There’s an entire section on the site devoted to Eco-friendly items, and the site is so well organized you can find anything you’re looking for in a matter of moments. So head on over there and start day dreaming over the honey pots, geometric birdhouses and french presses.
Everyone should be surrounded by beautiful things that they love, and All Modern has something for everyone.
The contest is a kind of treasure hunt as follows: Simply find the middle names of any three official Clusterflockers, and post them below in the comments. One entry per person, and the winner will have their name drawn from a hat.
Contest closes at Midnight PST, Thursday August 20th.

Maserati’s Garage Competition Winners
The luxury car brand Maserati organized a competition to search for the finest architectural garages. The competition was divided into two sections. One for existing garages and other for concept garages.
I would be glad to be a roommate of a Maserati in either of the winning designs.

The significance of the absence of men in fishermen’s villages is also testified by the fact the first dildos were found in fishermen’s villages.

Marginal Revolution asks
Lots of interesting observations, but this particularly stuck out for me:
Overall it is the more obscure books from that era that would likely rise to be the bestsellers today.
“Due to the high number of dishonest people grabbing and running away (and) stealing our beer, we must require prepayment for beer.”
Any angle I take with this story seems wrong.
The Death of Mozart
Since the composer’s death in 1791, there have been various theories about the cause of his untimely end, from intentional poisoning, to rheumatic fever, to trichinosis, a parasitic disease caused by eating raw or undercooked pork.
On his death certificate it was officially recorded that the cause of death was hitziges Frieselfieber, or “heated miliary fever,” referring to a rash that looks like millet seeds.
But researchers from the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands said studies on his death have generally been based on less-than-reliable evidence, like accounts from people who witnessed Mozart’s final days, written decades after his death.
Compared to intentional poisoning, the newly accepted cause seems pretty boring.
Re-enacting Vietnam
Although no national organization currently exists, Vietnam War re-enactments are popping up around the country.
A business owner by day, Gray looked the part of a platoon sergeant. He was dressed in fatigues, smoke grenades hanging from his body, and carrying a sidearm and bayonet strapped to his legs.
The mission: a long-range patrol into the “jungle” path to gather intelligence on the enemy. About 80 onlookers watched from the clearing as the patrol entered the woods. The crowd listened as dispatches from a civilian narrator and Gray were transmitted over speakers.
“Vietnam was a different war, a guerrilla war,” Horvath told them. “Once you entered, everywhere around you was a killing zone.”

SXSW Panel: The Rise of the Unbook
The SXSW Panel Picker is up and one of the panels Deron and I are involved with made the first round cut, The Rise of the Unbook. The concept is pretty straightforward:
Driven by new technologies and ideas, the world of publishing is transforming. A new form is emerging; an ever-evolving, never-finished book, typically characterized by a curator, community and focused topic area: The unbook. We’ll discuss this new medium and its implications.
The Panel:
Ben Vershbow (New York Public Library)
Dave Gray (Co-Founder of the unbook movement, Founder of XPLANE, author of Marks and Meaning)
Russell Davies (Author, Wired columnist)
Andrew Simone (Clusterflock, design researcher)
Deron Bauman (Founder, Clusterflock, author, documentary film-maker)
Christian Crumlish (Curator of Yahoo Pattern Library, unbook author)
If this looks interesting to you, then we would appreciate a thumbs up. You can register here to vote.
UPDATE: An interesting and unintentional companion panel worth eyeballing is Snarkmarket’s Kindle 2020 (see a detailed explanation here).
