Barbie on the big screen

Universal has acquired the rights from Mattel for a live action Barbie movie.

Barbie’s full name is Barbara Millicent Roberts; is sometimes a high school teen, but at times a pilot, military officer, teacher or astronaut; drives a slew of cars; dates a man named Ken; and has friends straight out of a United Colors of Benetton ad.

    It cannot possibly surpass a narrated slide show I witnessed years ago starring Headless Barbie and Legless Ken (two of assorted Barbies and Kens owned by the young daughters of a friend). Headless Barbie and Legless Ken were on a date in the Barbie convertible. Headless Barbie drove. Legless Ken (voice supplied by one of the girls) murmured such endearments as, “Oh, Barbie, your lips are the color of red, red tulips.”

    Nor, come to think, could it surpass a Fourth of July extravaganza produced by the same little girls. Barbies still possessing their heads were strapped to sky rockets, and after Dad had lit the fuses and the rockets soared into the empyrean, the cry went up, “Barbies — in — SPACE!“
