dear clusterflock

What’s your theme song?

I think Highschool Stalker by Hello Saferide might be mine, for better or for worse.

“I’ve been looking for you, baby
Anywhere that I can find
And I was searching for your sweet name
Cause you never left my mind
I’ve been on the Altavista
I went twice on the Yahoo
And everywhere I go, there is always a clue, always something about you
that may help me get my hands on you
like

It’s your birthday tomorrow
but you’re not getting anything you know
It’s your birthday tomorrow
but I’m not supposed to know
Not supposed to know

Hacked into the school computer
changed all of your D’s to A’s
Broke into the dentist’s office
Know you never needed braces
Know you moved from another small town
Know you’re never going away
Cause soon, you’ll fall in love
The fortune teller said
And I know who will be the one to make your bed

And it’s your birthday tomorrow
but you’re not getting anything you know
It’s your birthday tomorrow
but I’m not supposed to know
Not supposed to know

I was talking to your best friend
I checked out your high school yearbook
I was driving round your Mum’s house
she makes great coffee, you know
I spoke to your former girlfriend
so now, I know what I’ve got to expect
And yesterday, you passed me by
I swear, you nearly said Hi
I could have died
I swear to God I started crying”

Reinventing Axl Rose – Against Me!

“We want a band that plays loud and hard every night. That doesn’t care how many people are counted at the door. That would travel one million miles and ask for nothing but a plate of food and a place to rest. They’d strike chords that cut like a knife. It would mean so much more than a t-shirt or ticket stub. They would stop at nothing short of a massacre. Everyone would leave with the memory that there was no place else in the world and this was where they always belonged. We would dance like no one was watching, with one fist in the air. Our arenas just basements and bookstores across an underground America. With this fire we could. We want a scene where the music is free, where beer is not the life of the party. Where there’s no need to shit talk or impress cause honesty and emotion are not looked down upon. And every promise that’s made and bragged would be meant if not kept. We’d do it all because we have to not because we know why. Beyond a gender race and class we could find what really holds us back. Let’s make everybody sing that they are the beginning and ending of everything. That we are all stronger than everything they taught us we should fear.”

My Morning Jacket – The Way That He Sings

“why’s it so strange when they say that the world’s movin upwards?
Why’s it surreal when my hands feel they cant roll the dice?
Why’s it so great just to wake every day, alive and by your side.
    It’s a mystery I guess, there’s lots of things I cant find.
Its not the way that you look, but your move that catches my eye.
Why’s it so soft when the cannons unload on the others?
Why’re we so loud when we say it wont happen to us?
Why does my mind blow to bits every time they play that song?
It’s just the way that he sings,
not the words that he says, or the band.
I’m in love with this soul, it’s a meaning that I understand. “

It’s my theme song and it tears my heart out every time I hear it.

A difficult question, Amanda Mae. If asked another day, another evening, I might come up with any number of other possibilities. Tonight, this one suits me.

    Simon and Garfunkel, American Tune.

…Oh, and it’s alright, it’s all right, it’s all right
    You can’t be forever blessed
Still, tomorrow’s going to be another working day
And I’m trying to get some rest
That’s all I’m trying to get some rest.

What an intriguing (and incredibly difficult) question. I mean, on the one hand, I might just want to try to isolate something I love a great deal; but on the other hand, should my theme song in some way reflect something of my own state of mind or psyche or something? Wow. Will this do for the time being?

“Bulldog Skin” by Guided by Voices

    I played the part
    I played the start
I made a table out of clay
I placed my hands upon the plans
I waited for a proud display
    I played around
I heard the sound of certain trouble on the way

    I’ve got bulldog skin

    I took a car
    I drove it far
I dug the quality of steel
    I crashed my nerve
    I made it swerve
I made it back – was no big deal
    I tasted blood
    A date with scud
And now I don’t know how to feel

    Because I’ve got bulldog skin

    ###

I gave this a lot of thought as was as surprised as anyone by where I landed. Another option was Eric Dolphy’s jazz classic “Hat and Beard.”

Très belated reply to Amanda Mae’s theme song query: “Don’t Doubt Yourself, Babe”. Written by Jackie DeShannon. Recorded by The Byrds.

A fellow who is now a ‘flocker put some moving pictures to the Byrds’ version and posted it to YouTube a whole year ago today.
