Rep. Todd Tiahrt laughed at by constituents

When Kansans laugh at their congressman’s lies, is that a turning point?

Tavi Gevinson, thirteen year old phenom and fashion blogger

tavigevinson

Please go here to watch the video.

Her blog.

From the article where I found out about her.

Gevinson recently posted an extract from her barmitzvah speech. “As I said earlier, the Nazarites wore just enough to keep them warm, believing that that was the wish of God. Over this past year I have become increasingly interested in clothing, and have developed a clearer understanding of the idea that clothing can be art… Rei Kawakubo, who many regard as the first conceptual designer and whose clothes can often inspire uncomfortable thoughts or feelings in people, is my favourite designer in the world… Using fashion as self-expression can go beyond wearing a shirt with a slogan, as clothing has the ability to evoke an entire feel, or atmosphere, or emotion, or world.” She has also posted a video of her performing a rap about the Comme des Garcons collection for H&M.

I’m officially in love with Tavi.

Super Memory

Four people who remember everything.

A Cleveland native, Rick Baron [. . .] uses his super memory to win stuff. Although unemployed, he’s extremely resourceful and is constantly entering, and winning trivia contests. His list of rewards include restaurant gift cards, tickets to sporting events, even all expense paid vacations (Baron has won 14 of them).

Eye Tooth

A sixty-year old woman has regained partial sight due to a tooth implanted in her eye.

Sharron “Kay” Thornton, from the southern US state of Mississippi, lost her sight in 2000 when she came down with a case of Stevens-Johnson syndrome, a rare disease that scarred her cornea, according to the University of Miami’s Bascom Palmer Eye Institute.

For patients whose bodies reject a transplanted or artificial cornea, this procedure “implants the patient’s tooth in the eye to anchor a prosthetic lens and restore vision,” said Thornton’s surgeon Victor Perez.

Charged Aerosol Release Experiment

Noctilucent clouds are clouds that naturally occur at 50 miles above the earth and glow at night. Last weekend, NASA made one for themselves.

The experiment created a man-made noctilucent cloud using the fourth stage of a NASA Black Brant XII suborbital sounding rocket that spewed exhaust particles 173 miles (278 km) above Earth. Ground-based radar and camera stations recorded the resulting cloud’s formation and illumination. The U.S. Naval Research Laboratory and Department of Defense’s Space Test Program oversaw the launch, which it called the Charged Aerosol Release Experiment.

Shocking New Ideas to Change the World

Wired has posted this Warning: The ideas expressed here may be dangerous.

For this year’s list, we walked right past the usual suspects and went looking for trouble. We wanted radicals, heretics, agitators—big thinkers with controversial, game-changing propositions. We found a prison reformer who wants to empty jails, an economist who thinks foreign aid hurts more than it helps, and a military theorist who believes the US should launch preemptive cyberattacks, right now. Then there’s secretary of defense robert gates, who wants to win wars, not just prep for them. Risky? Sure. But this is no time to play it safe.

Synthetic biology, 2

Drew Endy, a board member at the BioBrick foundation, commented on my last entry on synthetic biology:

The existing collection of BioBrick parts is fantastic, relative to nothing at all, but is still very far from being a mature technology platform. Much software and wetware engineering is still required simply to determine if the technical promise of the BioBricks approach will scale within the “messy molecular milleau” inside cells. Additional work in terms of defining if and how communities of responsible wetware engineers and hackers might develop and thrive needs to happen.

He seems to expand on this idea in the New Yorker:

Djarum

Djarum got his ass deported, but that other kid is still around:

And, another thing, the dude always smells like chocolate or fruit or like a campfire that’s been peed out. Seriously. Last summer, I was at Six Flags Fiesta Texas waiting to get on the Superman ride and all of a sudden I caught a whiff of what smelled like someone dousing strawberries in hair spray and then lighting them on fire. I looked behind me and there’s this Swisher guy, wearing a Latrell Sprewell novelty jersey and looking violent. Weird, right? It gets weirder. About two months later I was at Brunswick Bowl, working on a real solid game, when who should I see two lanes over but Swisher, smelling like he’s bathed in nothing but peaches for the last week. Peaches! You believe that? It was all very unsettling and I ended up with a less-than-stellar 221.

To quote kottke, “wha?

“I find this disgusting . . .

. . . but I can’t help myself.”

Dear Abby won’t respond

How do you break up with a long time friend?

Background:

I’m female, 33 and never had to do this before.

I’m really busy (aren’t we all) and don’t want to go through a back-and-forth of he-said she-said who-was-wronged-more scenario.

I just want a clean break.
