The Aesthetics of the Internet

Virginia Heffernan (who I had not heard of until today) apparently wrote what I consider an interesting book proposal:

In the proposal, a copy of which was obtained by the Transom, Ms. Heffernan’s book is described as “a complete aesthetics of the Internet” that will treat the Web as a complex work of representational art, complete with “a poetics, a scale, a palette, a rhythm, a sensibility, a set of rituals and spectacles, a system of metaphors and an emotional range.”

Despite some idiotic observations in a link bait article by a certain Denton owned website (you will get no link here, sir), the idea of discussing the internet in a book form is perfectly legitimate and desirable. In fact, Snarkmarket has already laid the groundwork for it. Whether Ms. Heffernan has the ability to execute such a task, however, remains to be seen.

fucking terrifying

Have I ever told y’all about the time I was left alone in a room with a chameleon?

on stage

When my little brother was in kindergarten he stood with his class, in front of the entire school, holding a pumpkin. My mother stood in the back of the room with the other proud parents. The pumpkin fell from his hands and broke on the stage. Tim yelled, “fuckin’ pum’kin!”

I wasn’t there but I remember it like I was.

What is intelligence?

From the Singularity Summit 2009:

Many people asked what I thought about this talk after, because they knew that I have given a lot of consideration to the reality that most of the human race are morons. My basic attitude is that even if a lot of the trait-value difference is due to gene-environment correlation, what are you going to do about it? We don’t live in Stalin’s USSR. Also, Dickens reported that he had unpublished data which suggested that there was a 0.70 correlation between economic growth (GDP) and increase in the Flynn Effect.

Also:

The Fallibility and Improvability of the Human Mind – Gary Marcus: Focused on memory, and suggested that since the mind is imperfectly engineered there’s plenty of room for design improvements.

The Polaroid is back.

The Impossible Project actually worked, the internet never ceases to amaze me:

As we have created quite some buzz about Analog Instant Photography over the past 12 months, the Polaroid licensee – The Summit Global Group – now can’t resist any longer and announced at a press conference on October 13th in Hong Kong that they will re-launch some of the most famous Polaroid Instant Cameras.

Therefore they are commissioning The Impossible Project to develop and produce a limited edition of Polaroid branded Instant Films in the middle of 2010.

I will believe this until the day I die.

James Madison:

There is no maxim in my opinion which is more liable to be misapplied, and which therefore needs elucidation, than the current one that the interest of the majority is the political standard of right and wrong. Taking the word “interest” as synonymous with “ultimate happiness,” in which sense it is qualified with every necessary moral ingredient, the proposition is no doubt true.

But taking it in its popular sense, as referring to the immediate augmentation of property and wealth, nothing can be more false. In the latter sense it would be in the interest of the majority in every community to despoil and enslave the minority of individuals…. In fact, it is only establishing, under another name and a more specious form, force as a measure of right….

hi

you are forgeting two main points here
1-verginity is not that important, but rather the commitment, you have sex with a person becuase you love him/ her, or you need sex, not money,
2-do you really want to have you first memory of sex and love cheeply, feeling like a prostitute for the rest of your life.

$9.95, and I’m good to go.

The Survival Bottle itself is an acrylic, 27-ounce water bottle with a screwcap and keeper. Inside is a compressed towel that magically expands to 23″ x 11-1/2″, a 52″ x 82″ Mylar blanket, a 3″ x 1″ magnesium fire-starting block with a 3″ saw blade, a 5-function pen-knife/tool, and a whistle/thermometer/compass/mirror/magnifier/LED flashlight combo (phew!) powered by a couple of included coin cell batteries.

Laser etched cereal

We clearly live in the future:

The laser uses a concentrated beam of light which focuses the energy within the beam, down to a very small spot on the Corn Flake.

Mirror galvanometers are then used to steer the beam creating multiple vectors that reflect the laser from different angles and ultimately make up the image.

The energy density within the laser spot diameter is sufficient enough to give the surface of the flake a darker, toasted appearance without changing the taste.

Kellogg’s embarked on the project to reinforce that they don’t make cereals for any other companies and to fire a shot across the bows of makers of ‘fake flakes’.

Toyobaru

Toyota’s FT-86 concept, which will be officially unveiled at next week’s Tokyo Motor Show, combines attractive, aggressive aesthetics, rear-wheel drive and a Subaru-sourced boxer engine with the hopes of injecting a bit of passion into the Japanese automaker’s admittedly sterile lineup. And since the vehicle has reportedly been a collaboration between Toyota and Subaru all along, we’ve been anxiously awaiting the Subaru-branded coupe that is sure to follow.

Sounds good to me.
