Bats Find Fellatio Beneficial

091030-bat-behavior-02
I wish I could take credit for the title.

Intriguingly, the female lowered her head to lick the male penis during 14 of 20 copulations recorded on video. The licking typically went on for some 19 seconds, or roughly one-twelfth the average time of copulation. The male never withdrew from the female when she performed fellatio.

The researchers found the longer the fellatio went on, the longer the bats often had sex, with each second of licking adding roughly six extra seconds of copulation. The bats spent almost twice as long copulating when oral sex was involved than when not.

“It was difficult to provide some hypotheses for the function of the fellatio behavior,” Zhang said. “We held many meetings to discuss the functions.”

I love these scientific attempts to explain a good time.

This is probably the cutest post around here for a long time.

    Lesbians and small children.

Well, yeah. Sorry, Lucy. Of those you mention, who would? I probably shouldn’t equate cunnilingus with fellatio, though I do. And actually this image looks more like “69″ than fellatio. I can’t imagine either partner wouldn’t find such a moment beneficial. Honestly your mention of small children in the context of my comment distresses and saddens me. I had no such thought in my head. And that thought in my head, now, just makes me feel sick. I’m sorry, I was just trying to be funny.

Christ. Yikes. Just an off the cuff thing, a kind of semi-autistic auto response in completely factual mode. Sorry, Rick.

No worries, Lucy. Sometimes I know when you’re being funny. Sometimes I can see where you’re just trying to further the conversation by being “the devil’s advocate” Sometimes you just sound ticked off. Sometimes you honestly seem like you’re taking a stance “for cause.” I haven’t yet learned how to read them all. Forgive me for taking a moment’s offense. Know this, I appreciate seeing you here and I appreciate not always being able to read you perfectly.

By the way, I too love your workshop, I didn’t have a chance to say before. I’m envious.

That’s a very good point about how difficult it can be to ‘read’ each other in this context that’s stripped away of all body language signifiers. And smells, pheromones, all the physical stuff, the look in the eye, the tone of voice, that carry so much information about the vibe in which something is said. it’s like hearing loss: a person learns to lipread, and to read body language indicators of what might be being said. The animal and tactile is a very important part of human communication. And apparently, to tie this back to the post at hand, it is also a large part of the life of bats. Who find fellatio beneficial.
