Inside The Hut
So I’m renovating my work hut, and this is a photograph from stage 1 of the process. I’ve insulated the whole interior with space blankets and now I’m fronting it all off with thermal aluminium foil. After that, I’ll lay down some carpet underlay, with carpets and rugs over that, and Bedouin tent-style roof drapes from eave to eave, via the apex of the roof, with wooden tent poles. Looks like a little wooden cabin in a field from the outside, but inside will be silver factory meets desert gypsy caravan. That’s what I’m working on, anyway. I am the insulation queen, these days.

Spacey. I love it.
oh, that’s awesome.
Keeping warm is key. Good luck with that!
It’s remarkably cosy in there already. Though I have been moving around a lot, generating a lot of body heat. Still, it’s stormy around here these past couple of days, and the hut is holding its own. Layers of good looking insulation are key.
This is ‘home,’ in Ireland, yes? Will you leave the space blankets exposed or cover them with some kind of sheetrock/planking/etc.? It sounds like you are having a great time.
Cattle stampede?
Yes, this is the Hut part of home in Ireland. There is also a house, but this project is, as Ross calls it, my ’starter house’. Everything’s cool with the cattle these days, Coop. Our cats stampede daily, however. I’ve never seen a cat run like these guys. Except when challenged by a large German Shepherd. Then they Hold Their Ground. Our dogs live in fear of them.
Roof finishing: thick draped fabric, in a vibrant, rich colour, from each eave, up across the centre point of the roof, and down to the other eave, fixed with wooden tent poles in the apex and staples in the eaves. If you click through to my flickr, you’ll see a photo of the aluminium foil that I’m using to finish the walls. The aim is to have a kind of space station effect on the walls, with vibrant and super cosy roof and floor finishings.
Oh, Lucy, I can’t wait for Daryl to see this–he will just collapse with longing. He’d want it as a living space, though. The tinier the house, the happier the Daryl.
Five. Thousand. Staples.
And counting.
I love the rural Warholian feel.
And I want to visit you in the Hut.
Ah, but the Warholian will be replaced by the Bedouin. But we’ll still know it’s there.
Hey, y’all–let’s take a field trip to County Clare!
And counting! Everybody is welcome to visit. Ok, Daryl is going to be incandescent over our plans to reinforce the floor insulation by car jacking the whole hut up on its side, and get the pinkboards in. The inside area is about 11 metres sq. It’s small but it’s not tiny. You could live in it, but there is as yet no loo.
Well the Warholian is still intact with the shiny reflective thermal foil fronting the space blankets. Though frankly, space station is what I’m aiming for.

Tang, anyone?
You know it’s good for you ’cause it’s what the astronauts drink!
[...] rained intensely and erratically all day. The hut kept up its end of the bargain, remarkably well. It’s getting cosier in there by the minute, [...]
Lucy, this looks wonderful. I have always wanted a shed in the garden where I can go and hide. I can’t wait to see the finished shed!
Me too, Phil. Though really, we’re not dealing with a shed here. It’s got a veranda and everything. Beams!
A swish and very upmarket shed! I am salivating and it ain’t attractive! Thank the lord everyone is in bed, including the cat.
I have always found that private space away from the house very appealing. When do you think it will be finished?
I completely completely dig that, and funnily enough that aspect of it has really just crept up on me over the course of making this renovation. I wrote 4 of my songs out there in the freezing cold this past spring, huddled over a tiny little fan heater, and this whole thing began in necessity. I wasn’t even going to do the roof at the start. Ross made the windows over the summer, and it’s really just turning into something bit by bit, though it has gained momentum now.
I think I will get the walls and sills finished, and the overfloor insulation put down before I go to Paris on Saturday, but I don’t have the fabric for the roof yet. I’ve found something online I might just buy, but I want to look around, get the right stuff.
I’m going into town tomorrow to pursue a chocolate coloured rug.
So then, if there’s no loo inside, then you have to (let’s all join in)
Skip, skip, skip to the loo
Skip, skip, skip to the loo
Skip, skip, skip to the loo
Skip to the loo, my darling.
