Put This On

Put This On confuses me, if only because Jesse Thorn and Adam Lisagor are the creators. It’s not that they are unstylish, it’s that I just didn’t picture them as stylish.* The episode has its moments and I definitely learned a thing or two, but it still felt a little slow to me. That said, I’m interested to see more.

*This is a fault of my imagination, not their character.

Make no mistake, Andrew. I am not a stylish person. But if you hadn’t thought of Jesse Thorn as stylish, you just don’t know Jesse Thorn. The man wears an ascot just to go to the bathroom.

I believe it now, Adam. I find it amazing how disembodied voices and the occasionally flickr photograph does not do a person justice. Here’s hoping the disjunction between my mind and reality finds an equilibrium.

I’ve been told I write like a morbidly obese person.

I wonder if that’s code for having a winning personality?

Seriously, though, that’s ridiculous. Much like women, I have never seen a morbidly obese person on the internet.

My first impression was very much like yours, Andrew. While both Adam and Jesse are quite funny, etc. there’s nothing that really screams style about them.

But there’s a difference–and the first episode, especially Adam’s bits, highlights it–between “dressing like a grownup” and being stylish in a way that enables people with far too much money to waste thousands of dollars on accessories. The first is something I’m kind of interesting in hearing about, the second, not so much. (Speaking of, $500 for a pair of jeans? Really?)

I want to be clear: “confusion” does not equal “bad.”

One of the sections I rather liked was Adam’s bits,* I actually learned something about tucking in shirts I only intuitively knew. More stuff like that and I am really on board.

The “slow” aspect was more concerning the interview with that fellow did have enough meat for the time alloted. But, hey, that’s my opinion. Honestly, I think this is a great first stab at a murderously good idea.**

    *Sounds dirty, dunnit?
**Over did it with the metaphor, methinks.

I’ve spent several hours at Jesse’s apartment, and have listened to a million hours of Jordan, Jesse, Go! and Jesse’s apartment shows a flair for interior design. I do not know much about the lonely sandwich other than he does some sort of editing or special effects for a job. I was not surprised, but I am (sort of) excited to see this.

Also, I am sad I didn’t go to the Pasadena Put This On party! HUELL HOWSER WAS THERE.

I sent Jesse this, when they were in the middle stages of Put This On:

Det. William ‘Bunk’ Moreland: [on detail] A different look for our boy.
Off. James ‘Jimmy’ McNulty: Yeah, Perry Ellis, or something.
Det. William ‘Bunk’ Moreland: Now, how would a just-rolled-out-of-bed-looking motherfucker like you, know the designer?
Off. James ‘Jimmy’ McNulty: [pauses] Okay, I’m guessing.
Det. William ‘Bunk’ Moreland: It’s a Joseph Abboud. He puts dark buttons instead of brass on his blazers. That’s the Abboud signature.
Off. James ‘Jimmy’ McNulty: You know what they call a guy who pays that much attention to his clothes, don’t you?
Det. William ‘Bunk’ Moreland: A grown-up.

Amanda, Adam /Lonelysandwich also does a top-shelf podcast with Merlin Mann and Scott Simpson, You Look Nice Today. This is coming from a dude who normally hates podcasts.

Yeah. We’ve discussed this. Previously. In our lives. In the past.
