I was in love with Pearlie Bernal in high school. She had been studying piano since childhood and played beautifully. She was also beautiful her own self and baked homemade bread!

    PEARL-y BER-nul? or PEARL-y Bair-Nahl?

Ricky-pie, proper Texas pronunciation would be PEARL-y Bair-NAHL.

Yes, I suspected so. I believe the other pronunciation to be Mississippi River Bottom Arkansas.

I remember being in GrandDad’s and GrandMother’s trailer home in Rockford, a thousand years ago. GrandMother was in the back bedroom placing a call. I heard her say, “Momma? This is Pearlie….” Pearl Neece. Sister Pearl. The names I’ve heard her called by. Before marrying it would have been Pearlie Oldham. There might be a spam name there one day maybe? It don’t have the same ring as Pearlie Bernal, but there’s something there. Maybe? Maybe just for me.

Back in the old neighborhood, Polly–of We didn’t have nothin’ til Lewis had his wreck, now we got cable in 3 rooms fame–had a daughter named Pearl. Pearl used to knock on our door and, when I’d answer it, just stand there and gaze at me with a dreamy look. Then she’d go home.
