Acting!
Philip Seymour Hoffman is often mentioned as the best actor of his generation. I’m beginning to think Maggie Gyllenhaal is the best actor of whatever generation she belongs to. Discuss.

Are we just talking Americans? Anyone? I can think of tons of people who I believe are better than she is! Julianne Moore, if we’re talking American women. Mathieu Almaric (sp?) if we’re talking any nationality, either gender. That’s just off the top of my head.
Oops. I just realized you meant in her generation. I’ll think on this, too.
are they her age? that was what I was trying to get at. she’s not always in the best movies, but I always am amazed by her ability to show something both completely natural and unexpected.
Marion Cotillard, Michelle Williams and Joaquin Phoenix are around her age and I think they are just as good, if not better. I need to see more Maggie movies. Looking forward to Crazy Heart.
Kate Winslet. James McAvoy.
She’s one of my two favorite Gyllenhaals
As I mentioned to Lucy recently, I finally noticed Michelle Williams. She has a quiet power but it’s compelling. She makes you forget Michelle Williams the actress. I lose myself in the characters she plays.
Whereas I end up with a crush on Maggie Gyllenhaal after each of her roles… but she’s just herself as [addict / baker / batgirl / etc] every time, isn’t she?* I guess this means I’m attracted to Maggie Gyllenhaal the person.
Other actors in their generation? While we’re on about Michelle Williams, how about her baby’s daddy, Heath Ledger? Or Joseph Gordon-Levitt?
* Amanda Mae just separately told me the same thing. Great minds!
I think Maggie Gyllenhaal is a wonderful actor, although I haven’t seen a lot of range from her. As to that generation’s best actor, my vote goes to Heath Ledger.
Kate Winslet and Joaquin Phoenix are closer in age to Phillip Seymour Hoffman than Maggie Gyllenhaal. But what generation is that?
I think Cate Blanchett is closer to PSH in age, but she would get my vote in most generations. MG is lovely, though.
I’m with you on Blanchett.
If IMDB is correct, Maggie and Kate Winslet are only one year apart. Kate’s been famous for longer, so maybe that’s why she seems older? Also, Joaquin is only a few years older than Maggie, I do believe. PSH is probably 10-15 years older than these kids, I bet.
I agree with the opinion that Maggie’s range seems limited.
I am obviously bored at work:
Years of birth
PSH: 1967
CB: 1969
Joaquin: 1974
Kate W.: 1975
Maggie: 1977
Maggie is much older than I thought!
Actually, I’m much older than I think.
I’m younger than that now.
I can’t believe Jennifer Aniston and Cate Blanchette are the same age.. Something’s off.
I also third the JG Levitt vote.
I’m tempted to go with Rachel McAdams on this one. Not only is she a mad genius, she never drives me crazy by being in everything or by always playing the same role. I don’t know if there’s another major successful film actress about whom that’s true.
I’d throw Helena Bonham Carter into this mix. Though I can imagine her to be one (half?) generation back from Maggie.
A Gyllenhaal thread?
Pure troll bait. Pass the popcorn.
I’m with you on Cate Blanchett & PSH-two of the most incredible actors of ANY generation as far as I’m concerned. Maggie’s great too, she just has a lot more proving to do to make me see her as the best of her generation.
