Our Favorite Films of the Decade

Daryl and I made a list of our 10 favorite films of the last decade.  They aren’t necessarily the best, but they’re the ones we most enjoy/admire.  (They’re alphabetized–it’s hard enough to settle on a list, much less rank it.)

Babel

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

The Fog of War

The Hours

In Bruges

No Country for Old Men

Rivers and Tides

Sexy Beast

There Will Be Blood

The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada

Runners Up:  Bad Santa, The Lives of Others, Pan’s Labyrinth

Did we forget anything?

I loved the first two of the movies on your list, and Melquiades Estrada, and Caché, too.

    The Royal Tenenbaums

  7. Dylan on January 7th, 2010 at 12:33 pm

    ummm… GRIZZLY MAN!

  8. Kelsey Parker on January 7th, 2010 at 1:30 pm

I’ll second Brick, The Squid and the Whale, and Let the Right One In, then add:

    Reprise
    Heaven
    City of God

    And if I’m honest:

    Green Street

But I’m biased from the fascination of tending pub during the 2002 World Cup.

  9. Kelsey Parker on January 7th, 2010 at 1:31 pm

Oh! And I’m glad you guys included In Bruges.

  10. Teresa R. on January 7th, 2010 at 1:43 pm

Alfonso Cuaron’s Y tu mama tambien and Children of Men

Fernando Eimbcke’s Duck Season and Lake Tahoe

    Viva Mexico!

Also: Stepbrothers keeps getting funnier the more I watch it. And LOTR: The Fellowship of the Ring, b/c I am a nerd.

Oh! And American Splendor and The Diving Bell & The Butterfly.

  11. Lucy on January 7th, 2010 at 1:51 pm

Yeah, I was gonna add Diving Bell. That movie was intense. I don’t think I’d ever want to watch it again, though.

It’s hard to remember movies that came out at the beginning of the decade. I totally loved Read My Lips aka Sur Mes Levres.

When I think about it, my most favorite movie moments of the decade were going to see almost any old movie restored and distributed by Rialto Pictures on a big screen, particularly anything by Jean-Pierre Melville.

  13. Sheila Ryan on January 7th, 2010 at 2:00 pm

Nina Paley’s “Sita Sings the Blues” should count. (Thank you, Lucy.)

  14. Lucy on January 7th, 2010 at 2:02 pm

    Oh Goddammit yes!!

  15. Cindy Scroggins on January 7th, 2010 at 2:31 pm

I just remembered another (thanks to Lucy and Sheila’s recommendation of Sita Sings the Blues, which has been in our queue for a while). I absolutely love, love, love The Triplets of Belleville.

  16. Cindy Scroggins on January 7th, 2010 at 2:34 pm

    Deron, what about Broken Flowers?

  17. Kelsey Parker on January 7th, 2010 at 2:43 pm

Oh my goodness, Triplets of Belleville! Yes.

  18. Deron Bauman on January 7th, 2010 at 3:12 pm

Cindy, oh shit! yes. very much so. such a beautiful movie. my god.

  19. Aaron Winslow on January 7th, 2010 at 3:40 pm

    I also really liked-

    A History of Violence
    Adaptation
    Bong Joon-ho’s Host
    Mulholland Drive
    Spirited Away

  20. Cindy Scroggins on January 7th, 2010 at 3:50 pm

I love Spirited Away. Miyazaki is a genius.

  21. Cindy Scroggins on January 7th, 2010 at 3:51 pm

I also remember liking The 25th Hour and 13 Conversations About One Thing.

  22. Deron Bauman on January 7th, 2010 at 4:47 pm

    yes, Adaptation. very good.

while I didn’t love History of Violence, I liked it a lot and I *loved* William Hurt’s fucking performance in it, Aaron, and I’ve been meaning to talk with you about that.

  23. Deron Bauman on January 7th, 2010 at 6:19 pm

    I can’t believe I forgot!

    Lost in Translation

  24. Deron Bauman on January 7th, 2010 at 6:35 pm

and I really enjoyed Napoleon Dynamite.

  25. Michael Smith on January 7th, 2010 at 9:12 pm

Maybe it’s because we’ve been watching them so much lately (thanks to the Iz) but I think something Pixar should be on the list. I’m thinking Monsters, Inc.

  26. Aaron Winslow on January 8th, 2010 at 11:09 am

    Also, Eastern Promises.

  27. Amanda Mae Meyncke on January 8th, 2010 at 11:23 am

    Also, Monsoon Wedding.

  28. Lucy Foley on January 27th, 2010 at 8:28 am

    Tideland
    Shortbus
The first half of Hedwig and the Angry Inch
Me, You and Everyone We Know

  29. Lucy Foley on January 27th, 2010 at 8:34 am

I also recommend watching City of God and District 9 closely together, interrupted only by The Royal Tenenbaums in the middle.
