They seem like nice people and they execute a really good idea, really well. I’d like them a lot more if I hadn’t seen them really stink up a set that lasted way too long back when I was young and beautiful.
I continue to be amazed by Sonic Youth. They have managed to remain relevant and interesting for what seems like forever. One of the things I love about David Byrne is that his music has evolved along with his own sense of quality and taste. I don’t always love Byrne’s music, but I always respect it. I feel the same about Sonic Youth. Also, like Byrne, they are smart and articulate about what they do–something I’m always happy to see.
Yes, god, a thousand times yes to the David Byrne thought. He’s my number two most important musician. Number one or number three is Bob Dylan or Smog, depending on the mood.
Aaron: Was that show at Emo’s? Because I saw them stink up a set there a long time ago and all I thought after the show ended was, “The only song I liked was the Dolly Parton one.”
My god, other people who know about and love the Gories…. back in the ’90s I knew people who liked them, but we all moved away and now if I play them for people they’re like, “Oh, that’s terrible! They can’t play their instruments! They’re not in tune! Who’s basement was this recorded in?”
I literally remember the first time I heard “House Rockin’,” and I literally remember the first time I heard the Sub Pop Singles Club 7″ cover of Spinal Tap’s “Gimme Some Money.”
Crude, primitive, and just what rock and roll should be. Rock and roll should, number one, rock. It should make you involuntarily shake your hips. Otherwise what’s the point?
Wilco — love em or hate em — is not playing the same game.
Big yes.
Best rock band of the last decade.
Good, yes, but best? What about Wilco?
I love, love, love Jack White. I am endeared to Meg White, but Jack–damn.
Seven Nation Army is the most-played song on my iPod.
Wilco probably wouldn’t even be on my top ten. It’s okay, you can learn to forgive me. It’ll be good for you.
Amanda Mae, talk to me about Sonic Youth.
Great for running. The rest of the time, I think of white stripes as good fashion sense.
I always think Sonic Youth is Pavement and Pavement is everybody else.
I think that’s one of the first things I ever said to Andrew. “Do you listen to Pavement?” and he said something like “I know I’m supposed to.”

Aaron, that’s how I feel about the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Verbatim.

They can’t all be John Denver.
The White Stripes are a great way to learn about other Detroit bands, like The Gories, and The Dirtbombs.

I want to have The Gories’s babies.
What Aaron said.
Gories’s
That just makes me happy.
I just want the babies. And to move to Detroit.
I think I want to move to Detroit, too. Let’s all move to Detroit and help Aaron raise his babies.
Cindy, have you ever been to Detroit? You would love Detroit. I love Detroit, and that is the truth. There is nothing not to love about Detroit.
And we could help Aaron raise his babies.
I have never been, but I love the very idea of Detroit. It has sad and beautiful all up in itself. Let’s go. Aaron needs us.
Detroit elevates sad and beautiful to a sad and beautiful level.
Aaron: Was that show at Emo’s? Because I saw them stink up a set there a long time ago and all I thought after the show ended was, “The only song I liked was the Dolly Parton one.”
Also: You’re still beautiful.
Thanks, Terri! You are, too!
The show I saw was in Chicago, maybe like 2001?
[...] This is how it will be, our new life. [...]
White with black stripes.
The Raconteurs = White Stripes elevated. ya’ dig?
