I don’t have time to rant an length about why–after getting screwed by the left, right, and center–Icelanders are a little ahead of the rest of us in these matters. (Though, unfortunately, part of the rant is that Icelanders ended up losing their sovereignty in their financial collapse. Whatever pro-transparency shield laws they manage to pass will only last until the EU absorbs Iceland.)
However…the best political book I’ve read in years is about Icelandic politics leading to the collapse. Dreamland by Andri Snær Magnason is worth tracking down. It’s a beautiful book and Magnason–Iceland’s most famous poet–is an elegant writer and more focused and logical than, say, Naomi Klein. Oh, and there’s a documentary movie about a project that Dreamland focuses on–the new Alcoa aluminum processing plant that Bush and Co. are tangled up with–with a Bjork and Sigur Ros soundtrack. Heartbreaking but eyeopening.
Only if they mine the beaches and blockade the island after all the journalists arrive.
Interesting.

There’s a bit about the book and a trailer for the movie here:

After you read Dreamland, you’ll see why Icelanders might be interested in helping investigative journalists.
