well, it depends what you mean. For me, there are two definitely two selves. A very self-centered, leave-me-alone-I-dont-want-to-do-anything self and the other. Both have pull and feel awfully northern, but that is just me.
A cheap compass willl stick on you. Hit a rough spot and the needle pops free–and you find it pointing away from where it had been telling you to go. I need to write a story about the Pope, lost in the woods with only a compass–and it leads him right to a bear.
Mine always points north and if it’s sticking then a little excitement is guaranteed to free it and get it heading in the right direction. It was the only way I was able to get myself around Texas.

Are we talking about geographic north or magnetic north?
I bought a spirit level yesterday, for no apparent reason that I am aware of. it’s pretty exciting though. I feel equipped.
Do they sell those at Ace Hardware?

My internal compass has always pointed true north but I was holding it upside down until recently.
