Who Needs History
AUSTIN – Republicans on the State Board of Education soundly rejected a Democratic-backed proposal Thursday that would have required Texas students to be taught the reasons behind the prohibition of a state religion in the Bill of Rights.

I’d say this makes New Mexico look better, but then I recall the comment by NM congressman Manuel Lujan that the problem in New Mexico is that half the people make less than the median income.
We’re doomed, Daryl. There’s no place for us to go.
As one who views it all from Canada, where from my vantage point your politico-cultural clashes appear bizarre and unreal, I ask an honest question:
How do sane people in Texas cope? I mean, for crying out loud, you can’t all live in Austin, right? I’m sure there are right-of-centre people living in your state that find this degree of stupidity embarrassing and shameful too? This isn’t a left-right question for me as much as stupid/non-stupid question.
Again, asked in all honesty and curiosity. I mean, I left Alberta because, among other things, I couldn’t stand the politics there (basically a one-party conservative province where the current government has been in power since 1971.)
Oh, Walt, that is a legitimate question, and we have addressed it here on a few occasions. I’m notoriously lazy for not taking the time to look up past discussions, but I will give this one a whirl and see what I can find.
Of course, if Sheila is available–she of the amazing powers of recollection and organization–she might help me out with this.
Well, I just spent a few minutes perusing the references to Texas on this site, and it brought to tears to my eyes.
Walt, it’s a huge subject. I’d like to find the thread where several of us talked at length about our ties to Texas, but as is often the case here, it’s likely hidden in a post about something completely unrelated.
I would suggest that you click on the Categories link on the homepage and enter Texas in the search box. You will begin to get an idea of what keeps us here.
