800 workers went on strike Wednesday and around 250 walked off their jobs
The warehouse and production workers in Denmark are rebelling against [Carlsberg's] new alcohol policy, which allows them to drink beer only during lunch hours in the canteen. Previously, they could help themselves to beer throughout the day, from coolers placed around the work sites.
The only restriction was “that you could not be drunk at work. It was up to each and everyone to be responsible,” company spokesman Jens Bekke said.
On the other hand, Carlsberg’s truckers are exempt from the rule.

Wilma Mankiller Interview 1993
Terry Gross: You came very close to death in the car accident. And you write that during that accident you lost any fear of death.
Ms. MANKILLER: Yes, I did. And it’s a special gift, I think. Having been so close to death – which, by the way, was the most wonderful feeling I’ve ever had in my life. It was more profound than childbirth, or better than, you know, the deepest love I’ve ever had with a man. It was an incredible, unbelievable feeling of unconditional love and very, very tempting to go on to death.
This portion touched me deeply last night as I listened in my car. The entire interview is remarkable . . . the low kilter of Mankiller’s soft spoken voice.

successful solar flight
A solar powered plane that is a prototype for one that will attempt to fly around the world flew a successful maiden flight yesterday.
During Wednesday’s 90-minute flight, the plane completed a series of turns by gently tilting its black-and-white wings, which are as wide as those of a 747 jumbo jet. It climbed nearly a mile above the Swiss countryside. The weather was sunny, and there was little wind — obvious advantages for a plane so light and dependent on the sun.

I was just thinking about how the numbers being discussed here are dual numbers–and that a person might think of them as a thing owned and then suddenly feel like a person is looking over his or her shoulder. And then I started to think about figures of speech and whole numbers (!); metaphor is, metaphorically, sexual–two unlikely things meet, turn about and blend, making something that stays in mind even though original identity is still there. Everything slips toward allusion or it dies.
oxygen-less multi-cellular organisms
The first multi-cellular organisms that live without oxygen have been found in the Mediterranean seafloor.
Like other Loricifera, the new species are sub-millimeter–long, Lovecraftian tangles of tentacle and shell, with their closest taxonomical relatives found among mud dragons and penis worms.
