This Is Where, part two: Milla

This Is Where is a photo movie project I began two years ago. The photos and narrative are by Lucy Foley. The music was composed and performed by Ross Bonadonna.

This Is Where is intended to be a multi-part exploration of the place where my practices of photography, performance, writing and collaboration meet. Parts one and two were first exhibited at Portora Royal School in Enniskillen during the Enniskillen Arts Festival, 2008. Portora is a 400 year old institution based in a magnificent old house high on the hill above Enniskillen town. It is where Samuel Beckett and Oscar Wilde were schooled.

This is part two of This Is Where. It is called Milla.

Lucy, I want to watch and listen over and over! I am going to project this for sure.

Cool! Some friends of mine projected it on their roof near the park here a week or so ago. There was a bit of wind and it was so fantastic to see it floating above the rooftops like that… I would love to see a photo of this in situ if you do project it…

Wow. This is hypnotic, Lucy. And the coat? Evocative. Because halfway through a strong picture came to mind of a little boy who moved here from Texas. He seemed fine on the surface, always polite and smiling, amenable. But he just would not take off his jacket, even when it was hot. Kept it zipped up, all the way up.

So I’m absorbed in Milla and at the same time I’m catching myself looking for the shadow of that sweet little boy in a corner somewhere. And that’s probably a good thing from an artist’s standpoint.

    Very, very nice.

Thank you, Lucy — you and Ross. This is inspiring (and I went back and looked at the first part of “This Is Where”.

An affecting meditation on life in this time, this place — on shedding. Losing our winter coats.

Lucy, I just finally found the time to watch this. It’s fantastic. And your voice! Have I said before how much I love your voice?

Thank you for sharing it with us.

Oh thank you Michael, that’s really encouraging.

And Christopher, I am so glad you were moved by Milla’s story. And for anybody who feels like it, please project it wherever you are: just send me a photo or two of it in situ, I’d love to see the different environments it gets to inhabit. Contact me directly or via twitter if you need a dvd.

I envisage further parts to this project, exploring this kind of process further. I see it as a long term project, probably over a number of years, intermittently.

In the meantime, there is also, of course, Rose.
