I agree–this has real presence to it. I could enjoy looking at this for hours and feeling disturbed by it. It has the kinds of texture and spontaneous features that remind me of what I like about Anselm Kiefer.
Thanks, Daryl. I am interested in thinking about the relationship between painting and photography in terms of history, space of the picture plane, and gesture or (lack there of in photography).
And its scary for me to leave the neat crucible of “photographic” concerns and enter the world of the “plastic” arts.
I think Richter for sure, Deron….he is unavoidable when painting on photos…
He is actually the reason, besides lack of ambition and talent, that I stopped attempting to make paintings way back in the day…
Yes, Richter does come to mind. I think it’s the textures you achieve here that make me also think of Kiefer. This image seems primordial–as if the geyser is generating a universe.
is this your painting, Barry?
I applied paint and ink over a reproduction of Ansel Adam’s photograph from 1942 of Old Faithful. So, yes, I think.
nice.
I like the exploration you seem to be doing.
Thanks, man..It’s all an experiment. Fun to try some new things out. I have no idea where it is all going, kinda exciting, kinda frightening..
absolutely.

Photographers are lot like dentists in this way.
failed doctors?
This is wonderful, Barry. Oddly your reasons for stopping painting aren’t disimilar to mine. I hope this leads you somewhere nice.
Great stuff.
This truly captivates, and I can’t wait to see where paintings take you.
Holy…I love it.
