four man rowing team reduces trans-Atlantic record by 11 days

The crew all suffered with food poisoning, which is particularly challenging when four men are sharing a 23 foot boat, and Leven had to perform surgery on Ray’s badly-infected toe with a knife.

You beat me to it, Deron–I was about to post this. I was amused by some of the comments at the news thread (once past the usual knee-jerk irrelevant political crap). One commenter noted that it took four men, and the full range of modern technology, to be a record set by two guys in an old wooden boat in the 1890s.

Still, it’s an amazing feat. I could see myself trying some similar thing in my younger days. It’s interesting too to see that these four men aren’t particularly young–mid 30s to early 40s. Maybe there’s hope for me yet, since I’m only a decade and a half or so out ahead of the oldest.
