have you seen what Old Spice is up to lately?

This ad campaign they have going is pretty clever. They’re responding with videos to people who mention their product.  This is the response to a Starbucks twitter post:

I guess I’m most impressed with the output/production.  They’ve kinda taken this social media advertising thing to the next level.

    This one is especially interesting to me… it’s basically an advertising campaign talking to another advertising campaign. There are enough layers of speech and meaning involved in this video to make a literary theorist or cultural studies prof salivate. And yet it also reminds me of what Kottke just posted with those dueling iPhone apps in that its a kind of meaningless echo chamber thing, like that scene in White Noise where people are just taking pictures of a barn because people take pictures of the barn, and somehow it became the most photographed barn…

    I love that comparison, Luke. I should read that book again before I forget it all. (It was once a favorite.)
