While I’ve been out traveling…
My father has been working in Russia every other week to research and develop recommendations for Putin’s economic advisors, most of whom are (relatively) new to capitalism and the competitive spirit of innovation. We’ve spoken on the phone most of my driving days, but it wasn’t until I arrived here at his brother’s house in Vancouver, BC, that I heard about these interviews. Frankly, that humility makes me even more proud of his accomplishments.
Is there someone in your family that you’re lately proud of?

yes! my nephew got his driver’s license and is enrolled in computer gaming programming classes. very, very proud of him.
My friends are my family, and I am especially proud of Cooper’s and my friend Steve, who was in a horrific single-car accident in 2006, veering off a two-lane road around midnight one night and hurtling into a ravine, where he remained, unconscious, until he was discovered and helicoptered out maybe twelve hours later. About this time four years ago I was not sure whether he would ever emerge from a coma-like state and, if he did, whether he would be anything like the Steve I had known.
This summer Steve bought a brand-new Prius, which he drives without modified controls. He is running his own errands, walking with the aid of a rollator, and is driving himself out to dinner at restaurants.
Just this February, when I was in Texas settling my mother’s estate and Phil was making a road tour of Texas, Steve, Phil and I went to dinner at the Veracruz Cafe in Cedar Hill. One summer evening a few weeks ago Steve drove himself and a friend out to dinner at Veracruz, and that made me happy.
I am very proud of Steve, and I am looking forward to his driving up to the Driftless Region to visit me before long.
I am very proud of my brother– he’s going through a divorce and has been nothing but respectful to his ex-wife through the whole process. Also, he’s taken all the steps he felt he needed in order to heal– working out and eating better (he’s been overweight for a few years, something that’s really bothered him), hanging out with friends and family, traveling, thinking about dating again. He’s a strong person and I admire his ability to look forward and build a new life for himself. He’s lovely.
You guys (and your friends and family) are terrific! Yay.
I’m proud of my son who recently landed the job he wanted. It was in a completely new field for him and he had little experience – the interviews were over a week and yet they called him mid-week to offer him the job and cancelled all other interviews. I ain’t felt so good in a long while.
Wow, Phil, that is great! Good on Richie. Sounds to me as though he has a lot going for him.
