White Teeth

I was quite pleased with the four episode mini-series based on the Zadie Smith novel White Teeth (a favorite): short, sweet, and captures the spirit of the novel. American television needs more mini-series. A good one eases into a narrative and finishes off at just the right time, none of this “four seasons, fifteen episodes a piece” nonsense.

Thanks for the tip. I’ve always wondered how that book would turn out if someone made it into a movie.

Andrew, do I need to read White Teeth first? It’s on my list, but not at the top.

    you bet, vin.

you might, Michael. I was really pleased with the book and this caught the spirit of it. Depends on what you want to color what, I suppose.

Yeah. In general, I’m a book before film person. I like to let the thing develop in my mind without it being colored by what someone else “saw” in the words. But sometimes I find it doesn’t matter.

I’ll set to reading White Teeth as soon as I finish The Shipping News.

Incidentally, this gives me another excuse to put off starting Infinite Jest for the 3rd time.

Also a good mini-series, though I heard it was coming back for another 3-episode season, was the BBC’s modernized Sherlock Holmes series that just came out. I was surprised by how good it was and how true to the characters they were (the ones I remembered from the books anyhow). Certainly worth checking out if you have a few hours to kill.
