Flannery Scroggins:

One of my earliest memories is actually a dream (at least I hope it was). I was not yet 2 years old, since we were living in the apartment on Reiger. I was looking down a desolate stretch of highway that appeared to have been “tilted” and cracked open by a recent earthquake. About 50 yards down the road, two men were walking side-by-side, a few feet apart. One man was wearing a black suit, and the other a white suit. A bolt of lightning struck the ground between them and I woke up. I remember seeing a storm brewing outside with flashes of lightning illuminating my crib and the sheer pink curtains on the window in my room.

A safe place. And lacking it, the slip and glide appears. Smiling at others while ice skating, while not thinking about ice skating. The other range of thought accumulates as memories of skating with friends pile up. And then the friends are no different from the movies one watches. And the safe place to start is then always one made rather than found, when finding is the view across the border, at the gate that blocks the road.

dear clusterflock

I’m fascinated by what we remember from when we were young. My earliest memory is that of my brother being born: not the actual birth, but the sudden appearance of another person in my life. We lived in a flat back then. I remember the concrete flights of stairs and the wire safety glass in the windows. What are your earliest memories?

Human Development and the Family, 2

What happens if we don’t have experiences where we feel safe, we start to notice the reality of the outside world. And what happens is that we then develop skills to deal with what’s out there, instead of skills to identify with ourselves. The problem is, the more we feel that we have to protect, the more that becomes the story — the way we are.

How’s it going?

The capacity to tolerate seemingly contradictory ideas is said to be the hallmark of a peculiar form of sanity. Somebody said that.

Or maybe they were talking about insanity.

Whichever it is (and whoever said it), it’s what I have been trying to do in recent days. Trying something fierce.

Example: (1) Assume that my missing cat is dead and get on with my life, and ( note: and, not or ) (2) Do what contributes reasonably to the chances I will find my cat.

This is but one instance of how my life has been going lately. One among many.

droid

via kottke.org:

1. Open Terminal.app
2. Type say -v “Cellos” “droid” at the prompt
3. Experiment: say -v “Cellos” “droid. sucks.”
4. Or say -v “Cellos” “droid want to be iphone when droid grow up”
5. And finally, say “i am trying to unlock the mysteries of the universe, like how the big bang happened and where all the lost socks go after being in the dryer that really makes me mad”

add in this switch : -o “droid.aiff” and you’ll save it into a file called droid.aiff.

do with that what you will.

For the last couple of weeks I’ve been working as an assistant (on a large scale mural) for the author/artist Alasdair Gray. Here’s Alasdair and assistant Ella checking emails before the start of the day working where we walked around the West End taking photos for reference. A good day.

build your bike

I want to go to the Bamboo Bike Studio and build my own bike.

Build your own bike in two days at our workshop in Brooklyn or San Francisco.

We supply all tools and materials, and as much – or as little – help as you need.

We don’t assume any prior experience, but a strong work ethic and an appetite for the unfamiliar is essential.

You can also order a kit, source your own bamboo and build it at home.

The world is, in fact, a much better place than the optimists allow: and that is why pessimism is needed.

thinking about thinking

The study found that people with stronger reflective, or introspective, ability appear to have a higher volume of gray matter, the outer layer of the brain, in the part of their brains sitting behind their eyes.

Fleming and his colleagues also found a connection between introspective ability and the integrity of the white matter that connects with the anterior prefrontal cortex. In other words, better white matter was also linked with a greater ability to think about thinking.

It’s not yet clear if it’s better to be more or less introspective, but researchers suspect there may be a down side to looking inward too much, and potentially a link to depression, according to Weil.

Couldn’t see that one coming.

the history of “strong, like bull”

The earliest reference to “strong, like bull” I was able to find was in a 1950′s sitcom called “Make Room For Daddy”(1), featuring the actor Hans Conried(2) as Uncle Tonoose. Conried would later appear on the Rocky and Bullwinkle show as the voice of Snidley Whiplash. (This is important because the most common origin listed of strong like bull is from the character Boris, and Conried is the most likely reason for it’s appearance in the cartoon.)

Tonoose was known for saying “strong like bull, smart like streetcar” as a catchphrase. His first appearance on the show was in 1956.

Only about a dozen people in the same review were found to be wearing Mets gear

Since 2000, more than 100 people who have been suspects or persons of interest in connection with serious crimes in New York City wore Yankees apparel at the time of the crimes or at the time of their arrest or arraignment. The tally is based on a review of New York Police Department news releases, surveillance video and images of robberies and other crimes, as well as police sketches and newspaper articles that described suspects’ clothing. No other sports team comes close.

A preliminary draft of the resolution states that “diverse reviewers have repeatedly documented gross pro-Islamic, anti-Christian distortions in social studies texts” across the U.S. and that past social studies textbooks in Texas also have been “tainted” with pro-Islamic, anti-Christian views.
