Deron, do you have a sense of whether the majority of costumes are off-the-rack? DIY? Is it possible to say?

  2. Deron Bauman on September 5th, 2010 at 11:52 pm

Sheila, that’s a good question. I wish I knew. I have about a half dozen things I would like to find out.

Sheila, I was wondering that same thing myself, especially about some of the dresses. I suspect the majority of these particular costumes are purchased, with DIY accessorizing. Though, one should never underestimate the dedication of anime fans when it comes to bringing The Goods.

The convention runs through today. If I go (who am I kidding) I will see what I can find out.

Hey, Deron–Flannery and Ryan will be there today with Mia. Be on the lookout!

  6. Deron Bauman on September 6th, 2010 at 11:18 am

    oh!

  7. Deron Bauman on September 6th, 2010 at 11:26 am

    okay, now I’m excited.

    Will Mia be in costume?

  9. Cindy Scroggins on September 6th, 2010 at 2:35 pm

No, I don’t think any of them will be in costume–but you never know. They’re a creative bunch.

Mia responded to anime from the time she was quite small, particularly the beautiful films of Hayao Miyazaki. Daryl and I love to watch his films with her. My favorite is My Neighbor, Totoro; Mia’s favorite these days is Howl’s Moving Castle. I think Daryl’s favorite is Ponyo, with Spirited Away a close second.

    Miyazaki is a genius.

If I were to attend the convention in Miyazaki-inspired costume, I would choose to be The Spirit of the Daikon Radish from Spirited Away.

By the way, not Miyazaki but Studio Ghibli animation: you’ve seen Takahata’s Grave of the FIreflies?

  11. Cindy Scroggins on September 6th, 2010 at 2:52 pm

Yes, Sheila–that would be perfect for you. And, yes, I have seen Grave of the Fireflies, though I haven’t shown it to Mia. She might be ready for it now, I’m not sure. So sad and beautiful.

Also, I like saying Studio Ghibli.

We did not attend in costume, though I would’ve loved to have dressed as the Turnip Head from Howl’s Moving Castle.
Ryan likes Anime, but I went mostly for the J-Rock stuff. If you’ve never heard it, Japanese industrial music is something you really should experience.

    Did you see Deron?

  14. Sheila Ryan on September 6th, 2010 at 3:09 pm

Next year, Flannery. You as the Turnip Head. Me as the Daikon Spirit.

  15. Flannery Scroggins on September 6th, 2010 at 3:09 pm

    No! We looked, though.

  16. Cindy Scroggins on September 6th, 2010 at 3:12 pm

If you’d seen him, you would’ve taken his picture. Because that would have been funny.

  17. Flannery Scroggins on September 6th, 2010 at 3:16 pm

    Of course.
