As it stands, I have too much clothes (most of it crap), so I am pairing down. My two expensive pairs are APC Petite Standards and Outlier Winterweight OGs (specifically for winter), but it’s the third pair of “nice pants” I am trying to find. I already own a pinstripe suit, so that’s covered but seldom worn.
I have only jeans, aside from the pants that came with the one suit I have. The suit is still in the plastic sheath it came back from the cleaners in several years ago.
I once owned a pair of slacks, wool crepe, so black all light was absolutely absorbed by the fabric. If there was a wrinkle, it could not be seen. The hand of the fabric so supple it flowed, moved in beautiful waves around my bird-legs. I fail in their description. I wore them with a jacket of black and white, tiny-houndstooth-pattern, three button (it was, afterall, the early Nineties) with an Armani, celery-green shirt, with a quarter-inch, box-plaid of white and black. And a Boss tie of nuvo-mid-century pattern (read, blobby-squares) in kelly-green, white and taupe. I know, I know! Again, I fail in my description.
I wore this to a black-tie event in New York, the first time I ever went there (early Nineties). An awards event for visual merchandising. Several people there, complimented.
To come back to the question: Yes, a pair of jeans, yes, a pair of khakis. For a pair of dress pants…spend the money, they should kick out some teeth.
Wonderful description, Rick! When I was very young, I read about the way a Frenchwoman dresses. Of course, this could have been completely fabricated, but it absolutely embedded. It said first, work on yourself, exercise, eat good food, make sure you are breathing some clean air with a little sun thrown in. Your body is your best accessory, after all. Then, buy several expensive base pieces — the black pants you mention, Rick. A long skirt, short skirt, little black dress. Several pieces is good! Amend this for menswear of course.
Then, change the base pieces up and personalize with a few things unique to you, they can be cheap nothings that add color and style. I almost always have on a bright shawl in a solid color. I guess they’re called pashimas now.
I also have an exquisite string of pearls from the Iowan, his thanks to me for “doing the work” of giving him a son.
It is so easy when you dress this way. You have the rotating items of the base, always ready. Then choose a jacket, a tunic, a wrap, jewelry, shoes. Done!
jeans, khakis and hopefully some nice pinstripe pants.
It’s the last pair I think is tricky.
yes. you could probably skip the khakis if you have a pair of dress pants. maybe sweatpants instead.

black wool, good denim, I’m trying to decide if you need something else.
Undecided whether two long and one short or two short and one long.
Naturally I am refering to trousers!

Shoot, Phil–for a minute I thought we were going to get a different kind of thread.
Jeans, shorts, and cycling shorts.
Well, Cindy, I guess you might be able to get by with three pairs of English pants also.
I’ll take 3 long, please.
To the short ones, I just say no, thank you.
Well, a no, thank you is rarely misleading. Unless of course you didn’t mean it.
Jeans, khakis, whatever goes with your sportcoat/jacket

I love that, Rick.
RICK! Wear that every day. You are so posh and lovely.

I’m not such a fan of khakis. I avoid them when I can. Grey slacks serve me a similar purpose.
That is unless you meant khakis in a more general sense, in which case carry on.
Honestly, people, just buy Italian. That’s all you need to know.
