new shelves

This project was supposed to take a couple days…. I started last Thursday. Somewhere along the line it became the carpentry equivalent of nail soup.

Red Oak, Mahogany, Pecan, Plywood, Tung Oil, Wax.

Oh damn, this is beautiful. If I tried this I would have pictures of me thinking about replacing the wall.

    That’s real real good, Deron.

  3. Deron Bauman on December 8th, 2010 at 6:54 pm

    Thank you.

Daryl, right now I feel like I did.

I hope I said that right. I mean if I built a bookcase meant to fit into a corner like that, it wouldn’t fit and I would start tapping things with a hammer, and then a light fixture would fall out of the ceiling, and I would keep tapping and the shelf would fall apart, and then I would throw the hammer at the wall, short out some wires, start a small fire–and right at that moment by god Cindy would come home.

    You are a genius.

  6. Carole Corlew on December 8th, 2010 at 7:13 pm

How did you even think of that?

  7. Deron Bauman on December 8th, 2010 at 7:37 pm

Daryl, that’s how I took you — and that’s how I feel. But probably tomorrow when I see them I’ll be happy.

Carol, thank you. I’m not sure; I’ve done a couple other projects like this — a credenza, a liquor cabinet. The idea with this one was just to make them with what I had. Like I said, I thought it would take a couple days.

I would be proud to have these shelves in my home. Beautiful! I would not attempt the making without a professional, like you, by my side. Who would give a **** how long it takes? How long is for small-minded folk. We’d have beers on hand, it could take as long as need be. Wanna get on a plane?

  9. Deron Bauman on December 8th, 2010 at 9:19 pm

Give me a day to rest, and I’ll head your way. You got a table saw?

  10. Rick Neece on December 8th, 2010 at 9:27 pm

Dammit, sold the table saw in a garage sale a few years ago. Bledsoe’s rentals is just down the street, though. We could get ready.

    Love you, Deron.

  11. Deron Bauman on December 8th, 2010 at 9:30 pm

Okay, we need a table saw, a planer, a joiner, and lumber. I’ll see if I can check a bag.

    I love you, too.

  12. Rick Neece on December 8th, 2010 at 9:35 pm

    We’ll get the room ready…

  13. Rick Neece on December 8th, 2010 at 9:36 pm

For lumber, Sutherland’s is just across the street.

  14. Coop on December 8th, 2010 at 9:39 pm

    I like.

  15. Deron Bauman on December 8th, 2010 at 9:49 pm

    Gracias.

  16. Aaron Winslow on December 9th, 2010 at 9:00 am

Gets me choked up, lookin’ at ‘em.

  17. Casey on December 9th, 2010 at 12:00 pm

Wow, this looks lovely! In the second picture, it looks like there’s a piece on the end that maybe serves a special purpose — I see a short segment that is slightly inset, and the side view of another piece of maybe ply just below it — do you know what I’m talking about? What’s that for?

  18. Deron Bauman on December 9th, 2010 at 12:07 pm

Thanks, Casey. In both ends I used a piece of pecan that wasn’t finished on the edge. The piece above the horizontal plywood only extends about 2/3rds of the way across. Just a design choice.

  19. Casey on December 9th, 2010 at 12:41 pm

Ah, I see. The pecan is really pretty. We’re working on a 4+ year home improvement project (a simple addition to a townhouse, fraught with every possible disaster along the way — including the neighbor’s tree falling on it about four days after the framing was completed). But anyway, at some point this spring I will be at the point of finishing up a little recording studio — hoped to use plyboo to make built in desk for the control room. But the pecan looks intriguing…

  20. Deron Bauman on December 9th, 2010 at 1:18 pm

Casey, I’d love to see photos when everything is finished. We are at the end of a — cough — twelve year renovation here. That’s what prompted the shelves. I came back from Thanksgiving with the idea to spend the time between then and Christmas finishing up the dozens of little detail projects that are still incomplete. The shelves were larger than the other projects, but will do a lot for the general impression of the house — no more pile of books in the corner.

As far as pecan, it can be temperamental. It is a slightly dry wood that doesn’t necessarily want to stay flat. If you use it as a veneer, you should have no problem. Otherwise, you may need to integrate it with other woods to stabilize it.

  21. Phil Bebbington on December 9th, 2010 at 1:30 pm

    Deron, this is beautiful.

Daryl, don’t you still have that supply of white duct tape? That should hold everything in place.

  22. Cindy Scroggins on December 9th, 2010 at 1:39 pm

That white duct tape is still on the front French doors.

  23. Deron Bauman on December 9th, 2010 at 1:44 pm

    That’s period.
