Rugelach

Kelsey asked me to do a quick write-up about my experiences making these for a local cookie bake-off last weekend. Overall, I’m far less critical of the recipe than the author of that article. The cookies do take a while to make, but most of that is down time that can be filled with something else. I found that as long as the dough was kept well-chilled, it wasn’t too much of a pain to work with.

I made 48 of them:

The main changes I made to the recipe were to use pecans instead of walnuts, one cup of whole-wheat flour to replace a cup of all-purpose, and rolling the dough out on parchment paper instead of plastic wrap (for the continued maintenance of my sanity).

I won first prize out of eleven (excellent) entrants.

Joel, I love rugelach, and this batch looks great. Congratulations.

I can totally imagine pecans in your (one’s) rugelach. In rugelach.

Oh thank you, thank you! Joel, I’m so proud to hear that these cookies won. When I learn to bake beyond bran muffins, I’ll try these too.
