Speaking from my n=1, the MBTI provides a good framework for understanding what makes people tick and consequently how to work more effectively with them. Example: I had to work with a sensing type to plan a workshop, I am an intuitive type. I began by discussing the goal of the workshop in general terms but we couldn’t get on the same page. Once I identified that our sensing/intuitive communication gap might be an obstacle, I adapted my communication to her concrete, tangible style and we started getting traction.
Whether the MBTI is true or not, I believe it has utility as a framework from which you can approach different problems, and abandon as you encounter new information. I also think that it can be a tool, though not a sole determinant, for helping you find a career. This is not to say that the MBTI does not have flaws. I’ve met INTJs that were inspiring ministers in youth development, a career that is stereotypically un-INTJ. On the other hand, the MBTI has helped me to identify and articulate professional strengths.
As an aside, the site also criticizes gluten free diets. I would point people to take a look at Robb Wolf and Art De Vany’s work on evolutionary nutrition.
the headline is the punchline
“Apparently he went round to the other bloke’s house and somehow in the course of the conversation the subject of tattoos came up,” Const Malcolm said.
“The victim wasn’t interested at first but he was talked into it and he said he wanted a Yin and Yang symbol with some dragons.
“He rolled him on to his stomach and the bloke started doing the tattoo and there was another bloke standing there watching saying, ‘Mate, it’s looking really good’.
“He was told not to go out into the sun and not to show anyone for a few weeks.
“When he got home he showed it to the person he lives with and she said: ‘I don’t think it’s the tattoo you were after’.”
he said, she said
This passage is often said to be by Ralph Waldo Emerson or Robert Louis Stevenson. In fact, it was written by Bessie A. Stanley of Lincoln, Kansas, in 1905. She earned $250 as the first-prize winner in a contest sponsored by the magazine Modern Women.

Ask a law librarian

Caller: ?
Librarian: “You can’t do the petition and the answer to the petition.”
Caller: ?
Librarian: “No, I said you can’t do the petition AND the answer.”
Caller: ?
Librarian: “Are you the petitioner?”
Caller: ?
Librarian: “Who is the other party?”
Caller: ?
Librarian: “There has to be an other party.”
Caller: ?
Librarian: “Well you’re not filing a petition against yourself, are you?”
Caller: ?
Librarian: “Just because you can’t find him doesn’t mean there is no other party.”
Caller:?
Librarian: “You can’t fill out his answer yourself.”
Caller: ?
Librarian: “If you are the petitioner, just do the petition, and forget about the answer.”
Caller: ?
Librarian: “You’re welcome.”

Daniel Bell: “a socialist in economics, a liberal in politics and a conservative in culture”
Sociologist Daniel Bell, who coined the term ‘Post-Industrial Society’, has died at 91.
In “The End of Ideology” he contended — nearly three decades before the collapse of Communism — that ideologies that had once driven global politics were losing force and thus providing openings for newer galvanizing beliefs to gain toeholds. In “The Coming of Post-Industrial Society,” he foresaw the global spread of service-based economies as generators of capital and employment, supplanting those dominated by manufacturing or agriculture.
In Mr. Bell’s view, Western capitalism had come to rely on mass consumerism, acquisitiveness and widespread indebtedness, undermining the old Protestant ethic of thrift and modesty that writers like Max Weber and R.H. Tawney had long credited as the reasons for capitalism’s success.
He also predicted the rising importance of science-based industries and of new technical elites. Indeed, in 1967, he predicted something like the Internet, writing: “We will probably see a national information-computer-utility system, with tens of thousands of terminals in homes and offices ‘hooked’ into giant central computers providing library and information services, retail ordering and billing services, and the like.”

Jason interviewed Jonathan Hoefler about four of his fonts being acquired for MoMA’s Architecture and Design collection.
Hoefler: I should start by stating that you can never actually “buy fonts” online: what one can buy are licenses, and the End-User License that surrounds a typeface does not extend the kinds of rights that are necessary to enshrine a typeface in a museum’s permanent collection. The good news is that H&FJ has become as good at crafting licenses as we have at creating typefaces, an unavoidable reality in a world where fonts can be deployed in unimaginable ways. This was a fun project for our legal department.
“When you see a topic that purports to be psychological being used in practically every professional discipline except psychology, you have very good reason to be skeptical of its actual value”
A history, and evaluation, of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator:
One obvious trait that the MBTI has in common with horoscopes is its tendency to describe each personality type using only positive words. Horoscopes are so popular, in part, because they virtually always tell people just what they want to hear, using phrases that most people generally like to believe are true, like “You have a lot of unused potential.” They’re also popular because they are presented as being personalized based on the person’s sign. This has been called the Forer Effect, after psychologist Bertram Forer who, in 1948, gave a personality test to his students and then gave each one a supposedly personalized analysis. The impressed students gave the analyses an average accuracy rating of 85%, and only then did Forer reveal that each had received an identical, generic report. Belief that a report is customized for us tends to improve our perception of the report’s accuracy.
