Giving an “adult” camera to a three-year-old may seem like a recipe for confusion and broken electronics, but I’m continually amazed at kids’ thirst for knowledge and empowered responsibility.

Have you ever wanted to dirt one’s palms, but have always been cribbing and sulking over the fact that the shop is very far from your house and that you can’t go there very often?

Buckley and Rand had more in common than either realize – their differences were matters of form, not content. Rand held Reason and Self-Interest as the guide for her “God”. Buckley held his Catholic faith as the guiding light of his. There is little difference between the two of them, in reality. But in that reality, the gulf between them was great because neither was willing to recognize that they shared so much in common.

Vaporized Bambi

Professional athletes are turning to an extract made from the velvet on the outside of deer antlers as an almost undetectable growth hormone.

They harvest the so-called velvet antler (a soft coating that covers deer antlers) in New Zealand, freeze-dry it and then grind it into a powder. It then gets shipped to the United States, where it gets put into either capsules or liquid extracts that can become a simple mouth spray. You can buy it for $68 a bottle.

Metro Diner Closing

DALLAS — Metro Diner, a 24-hour greasy spoon that’d been on Gaston Avenue for 47 years, will close at the end of March, confirmed an employee at the restaurant.

“Yes, we’re closing, but we’ll be here until the end of March,” she said, before recommending that fans visit the branch in Oak Cliff, also open 24 hours.

This is a great place, right across the street from Cindy’s library. I’m sorry to see it go. The waitresses there used to raise an eyebrow when I would ask for a Pattymelt without the meat (Swiss cheese and grilled onions), but they never said no. Great hash browns, too; they know how to burn them there like you are supposed to.

Dwight Eisenhower writes to his brother

Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things. Among them are H. L. Hunt (you possibly know his background), a few other Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or business man from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid.

Somebody watered that tree.

Harper’s, Lefties, Unions, the Internet, The Atlantic Monthly, Irony, Labors of Love….

There’s too much to summarize:

Harper’s, one of the last bastions of old-line liberalism and a lonely defender of a certain idea of what literary culture should be, has long been supported by the largesse of its owner publisher and patron, John “Rick” MacArthur, an author and heir to a ceramics fortune who has long supported liberal causes. And now, in a strange, ironic endgame, MacArthur finds himself fighting against his own side: His staff has unionized.

The “faux Toasters”

For the second year in a row, the mysterious visitor to Poe’s grave didn’t show.

“I think we can safely say it’s not car trouble, and he’s not sick,” said Jeff Jerome, curator of the Poe House and Museum. “This doesn’t look good.”

There were a few impostors, however:

After last year’s no-show, Jerome this year was expecting Poe toaster wannabes imitating the real thing, and they showed up in brazen style. One emerged from a white stretch limo shortly after midnight. Two others appeared to be women. The fourth was an older man. All walked in clear sight of the Poe fans, contrary to the secretive nature of the real Poe toaster. All wore black hats and left roses and cognac, and two left notes, but none of the four gave the secret signal that only Jerome knows, and none of the four arranged the roses in the unique pattern established by the Poe toaster over the decades.
