Oh! They have those here–usually at a big shopping mall. One evening a bunch of trucks arrive; the next, there are rides and game booths set up all around. The neon lights are splendid, and the bleary demeanor of the carnies working there is part of the sad beauty of the whole thing. And by the way–thanks, Wil, this is a great painting.

When I was a teenager, my friends and I would go to these and flirt with the carnies.

Is English-language carny talk transnational, I wonder? (Thinking about Scottish carnies and American carnies.)

    I have no idea?

Maybe, Wil, you can do preliminary research. Apparently Glasgow is a winter gathering place for showmen, whom we in the States call carnies. Then when Cindy retires, she can get some funding to come over and make comparisons with her knowledge of American carny lingo.
