Tornado News

Three tornadoes rampaged through my little hometown in north Alabama. The relatives are fine and their homes escaped significant damage. They are staying at the lake houses just across the line in Tennessee because the power is not expected to be back on for days.

I reached Miss Nell at home, her phone is working and she was back for a bit. She was sitting in her recliner in the garage, reading the newspaper by the light of the sun. The recliner was placed in the garage because someone was supposed to pick it up and throw it away, then Miss Nell discovered it was a good place to go for a change of scene.

She reported long lines at gas stations. The owner of a couple of pumps nearby refuses to charge more than the pre-tornado price, $3.89. It just wouldn’t be right, he said. Miss Nell’s neighbor, the man from Maine, stopped by with a portable generator to “recharge” her refrigerator so the food won’t go bad.

Hale might have damaged her roof, said Miss Nell, but she’s not going to worry about it. She is 91 and notes, that in Alabama, “We’ve been through this before.”

At 4,000 times smaller than then width of a human hair, the rings cannot be seen with a standard microscope. That should make it rather tough for Schmidt’s fiancé to gauge the size of the diamond.

Clusterflockstock III

Several folks travelled today to Texas, some are on the road tonight, some were picked up and are already there. We (Danny and I, Andrew and Sheila) take off from KCI tomorrow at 2:05. We plan to be there by suppertime. You others will have to hold down the fort, I’m pretty sure we won’t be much in touch over the weekend. Off the “grid” as it were. I just have two words for you: BeHave. Or not.

No Place Like Here: Marfa, Texas

I’d buy that app.

Fuck it I’ve heard enough, I’m going to make some killer android app that listens to every word you hear and uses Google’s voice recognition shit and some semantic networks and logistic regression crap and fucking starts chirping at you whenever it detects someone is hitting on you, make it look like an incoming call from captain obvious or something. It make take a while to accumulate enough training data to detect every subtle hint but it should pick this one up pretty easily. #

The Beating of Chrissy Polis

My stomach is staging a revolt. I’m in a foul mood and reading about the beating of Chrissy Polis, a trans-gender woman who was beaten in the dining area of a McDonald’s Restaurant in Maryland, certainly didn’t improve it. The thing that pisses me off about that is the fact that I just happened to hear about this while reading about something else. It wasn’t in the news at all.

Like Bint Alshamsa, I hate what happened to Chrissy Polis, too. And I just learned of it from a TG friend seeking to talk with me about how an awful lot of men who profess to be into TG women want them to be both virgins and hos.

As India once said, más or menos, “Not to go all Women’s Studies 101 on y’all.”

But.

Daryl Scroggins:

I saw some cut lilacs in the flower section at Whole Foods the other day. They had dark violet petals with shards of white in them. Are all lilacs like that? The colors reminded me of a dress a child would wear.

lilacs

The lilacs have started blooming in our Pittsburgh backyard. Spring, for sure, and I’m glad to be posting here again after a break.

Bill Nye Boo’d In Texas For Saying The Moon Reflects The Sun

Rest in Peace, Phoebe

One of my favorites from the day:

And then we both felt strange.

He asked me slowly if I had been at the corner of Lexington and McCadden last week, in the evening. I said I had, because we were casting in the area.  He knew that, he says. I ask why, and he says because he jogged and saw me walking there.  I was surprised, I hadn’t seen him! How strange that he had seen me.

He asked if I had seen him, and if I had looked down to avoid talking to him.  The idea that I would be capable of such a thing seemed incomprehensible to me. I told him the truth, I said No, of course not! I was wearing heels and looked down at the ground to concentrate on not falling over, because I am clumsy and am terrified of tripping.  He was worried I had seen him and avoided him, or that I would think he was following me, so he jogged away without saying anything.
