We made our way to Desierto Light, one of the clubs in this area where party promoters host dance-offs to music known as Tribal Guarachero. For the finals competition, the 17-year-old prodigy DJ Erick Rincón of the 3ballMTY crew performed for a crowd of adoring pointy-boot wearing raver cowboys.

Today I drove behind a Badger Popcorn distributor’s truck and learned from the legend on its rear door of the many products included under the Badger Popcorn umbrella.
It started with a chance phone call in 1978. Dick Virnoche, having spent 19 years in sales and sales management for a major pharmaceutical company, decided a career change was best for his family and became a stockbroker. It was in this context that he met and began working with Harvey O’Neil. Harvey, who was in his seventies, was planning on selling Badger Popcorn and was interested in investing the proceeds. As Dick learned more about the business, the spark that ignites the imagination of every entrepreneur burst into flame. Less than 1 year later, and with the help of his wife Ellen and sons Tim and Tom, Badger Popcorn became the Virnoche family business.

In Case You’re Wondering About Beets
Sheila and I were talking about beets. In case you were wondering, you don’t have to limit yourself to beets from a can. Pickled beets are good. Raw beets in a salad are delicious. They also can be served with a side of cottage cheese. Another way to enjoy beets is to roast, peel and toss with balsamic vinegar, olive oil and a bit of thyme.
I like to juice beets with carrots and celery. You also could juice a beet with one-half lemon and two-three apples. Don’t throw away the leaves, they can have a bitter taste but are very nutritious. Beets are potent and can be a problem for some people, especially at first. But you can avoid nausea by chasing your beets with a raw apple. Beginners are advised to juice half a medium-sized beetroot once a week, slowly increasing amounts.
Sometimes urine will turn red after eating beets in quantity. This is called beeturia, or the passage of pink or red urine. The effect is temporary. Beets provide anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and detox support. In addition, the betaine in beetroot is an amino acid said to have anti-cancer properties.

Cindy and I bought some flowers recently at Central Market here, and one of the bunches was several stems of Pussy Willows. It had one of those plastic strip labels on it that is attached by the whole thing slipping through a slot in itself. Sometimes the slip-through doesn’t extend to the whole length of the label, and in this case it stopped short in a way that caused me to show it to Cindy. As exposed, the label read: Giant Pussy.
