Washington’s Beer recipe

From The Telegraph:

“Take a large Sifter full of Bran Hops to your Taste,” Washington instructed. “Boil these 3 hours then strain out 30 Gall into a cooler [and] put in 3 Gall Molasses while the Beer is Scalding hot.” “Let this stand till it is little more than Blood warm then put in a quart of Yeast if the Weather is very Cold [then] cover it over with a Blanket & let it Work in the Cooler 24 hours then put it into the Cask”.

cell phone trees

Absolutely brilliant.

They’d just throw them away because you already touched them with your scummy, penis-touching hands.

Poem

Under Night

A fire cannot be built
without memory, or watched
for need but for
loss informing the hands.
So, always, the blaze
of twigs is a city,
and the faint hiss and splutter,
amid ash,
human voices brought
to fuel.
We warm ourselves by all
that fades; we put away
our tending
to step in.

A wonderful word

Cindy and I have been saying this word all day:

Bad Moms

So over on La Face people are posting fab old photos of their moms. And they are fab, no doubt.

But I got to jawing with Cindy’s and Daryl’s friend Tom Sale (Pinky Diablo), and the notion of Bad Moms inspired us.

Joan Crawford is the obvious Queen of Bad Moms. But then there is Nico, who, it is said, bore a son by Alain Delon. Christian Aaron “Ari” Päffgen, whom she turned on to heroin.

Know any bad moms you’d like to celebrate today?

There should be a word for when you’re sitting and you fart and it goes up into your vagina. Hot pocket?

Can we use this to improve our lasers?

Certain brightly colored birds, like kingfishers or parrots, have feathers embedded with a not-quite-random arrangement of air pockets. Wavelengths of light that are related to the distance between the air pockets get scattered and built up more than others, giving the feathers their characteristic colors.

“After we learned this, we said, ‘Oh, that’s a smart idea!’” Cao said. “Can we use this to improve our lasers? Maybe we can use short-range order to enhance light confinement and make lasing more efficient.”

A billion years of evolution as leverage toward refining technology.

Mildred Pierce (for Mother’s Day)*

Not the Kate Winslet HBO version.

Directed by Michael Curtiz. Starring Joan Crawford, Ann Blyth, Jack Carson, ZacharyScott, and Eve Arden. (1945).

*Though the point is arguable, I went with the conventional placement of the apostrophe.

2011 Kentucky Derby

I forgot to watch it yesterday, but it turned out to be a good race.

Offer: 3 bowling balls

3 older bowling balls that no longer get used. Serious inquiries only. Please don’t waste your time and mine.

‘Grob’s research supports an earlier study conducted by researchers at Johns Hopkins that found that 60 percent of subjects who took psilocybin in a controlled experiment later called the experience one of the five most personally meaningful and spiritually significant of their lives’

Another example in the growing body of literature on hallucinogens and the alleviation of psychological trauma:

Grob distinguished between psilocybin and standard issue antidepressants, which he said tend to dampen or suppress psychological problems without necessarily curing them. “The response rates among people with terminal cancer to conventional medications that target symptoms of anxiety and depression are not that impressive,” he said. “Psilocybin is an entirely different mechanism. It has the potential to facilitate what’s been called a psycho-spiritual epiphany.

“And it’s important to emphasize that psilocybin may only need to be administered once within the context of ongoing psychotherapy, whereas conventional medications are generally used daily for weeks, months, even years.”

I remembered a joke!

It’s a cartoon, actually. A tall, lanky lounge singer bird croons:

Egrets, I’ve had a few

But then again

Too few to mention

Where to Live to Avoid a Natural Disaster

Leave Texas, come to Oregon:

Feet on the ground

The less we say about it the better
Make it up as we go along
Feet on the ground
Head in the sky
It’s okay
I know nothing’s wrong

Windom, Texas. April 30, 2011.

Thanks, all, both for granting me time and space to myself last weekend and for welcoming me on my returns to the fold.

Also, for confirming my conviction that there is no significant “generation gap” amongst folks who are simpatico.

Let’s do it again.

As Borges wrote, it’s a metaphysical detective story that leads us to a labyrinth with no center. All that’s left is paper, just kindling for the fire.
