I like this so much more than the bland, cartoony New Beetle that our roads have been cursed with for years now. I wish it were longer, but I think it looks quite nice, especially from the side.
The New Beetle was bland and cartoony, but at least it could be said to have a consistent design aesthetic. It was ugly, but all the parts of it were ugly in the same way.
The New-New Beetle is some franken-chimera of half a dozen car styles, with no primary driving theme.
I honestly would have said 911, Joel. Anyway, isn’t this a specific variation of the new Beetle, designed to be sportier? I mean, look at the differences between the Megane and the Megane RS. The standard might look better/more authentic.
Besides the original was designed by Hitler and that guy was a dick.
Ehh, I’d say it was more like Ferdinand Porsche and not Hitler who designed the original People’s Car, although that might even be a bit of a stretch. But Hitler couldn’t have designed his way out of a paper bag.
Anyway, I’ll just say that I don’t like this. It just feels like an aesthetic mess to me. Like something a child would cobble together out of disparate elements.
VW Design brief: Make it fatter, less distinctive – and can we throw some PT Cruiser in there?
Damn near read my mind.
With a touch of Bentley.
I don’t know – I see more of the original Beetle in there, especially in the rear window and roof. Like this: http://americandreamcars.com/1972vwyellow.jpg
Some of the other shots in the slideshow make it look more generic, but this side-shot looks classic to me.
K
You agree with Marco, but with a little Bentley.
I think it’s ridiculous, but also hotter than a fire.
I don’t see what was so fucking hard about making a new car that looks like a Classic Beetle.
Instead we get this shit.

I hope next time I agree with the third comment. Or the fifth.

I once made a poop that looked like that.
I like it. I might buy one.
I think Michael wins.
If you’d been shown just the left hand side of that image, would you have been able to identify it?

Every picture I’ve seen of the 2012 Beetle looks identical to that photo, with the usual variations in hubcaps and color.
