Researchers at MIT and The University of Cambridge are developing glasses that monitor facial expressions and allow the wearer to recognize subtle shifts in the emotional response of the person they are talking to.
By sensing emotions that we would otherwise miss, these technologies can thwart disastrous social gaffes and help us understand each other better. Some companies are already wiring up their employees with the technology, to help them improve how they communicate with customers. Our emotional intelligence is about to be boosted, but are we ready to broadcast feelings we might rather keep private?

Was at a wedding this weekend. At dinner someone asked who I was there with, when I said no one, they said “You are so brave!” I made my face a cascade of nothingness and said with a bit of confusion I said “Why?” Later on a bottle of champagne was my dancing partner.
Earlier in the evening someone told me that it was better for children to grow up in an orphanage, rather than let them be adopted by gay parents who would teach them about the “alternative” lifestyle.

We see a van in the woods, midafternoon. The light through the trees and vines is full but not overpowering. It is quiet.
The van is old. Not beat up, worn. Missing hubcaps and faded. It is parked, facing into the woods, the path it made to get there visible behind it.
We hear a voice inside the van before we know who it belongs to.

Giorgetto Giugiaro’s Lamborghini
Famed Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro submitted this concept to Lamborghini fifty years ago when they were still making tractors.
The design, as you can plainly see, was way ahead of its time. If you’re thinking it reminds you of the Ferrari P3 or 250 LM, or like one of the Alfa Romeo BAT designs, think again, because none of those — nor anything like it — came along until years later.
Giugiaro’s son digitized the design, created the model, and presented it to his father for his 70th birthday.

“The fact that a 12 year-old girl won the Name a Species competition puts paid to the lie that today’s young generation are not interested in nature,” said Adam Vaughan, editor of the Guardian’s environment section, which sponsored the competition.

Screw it, we’re doing a music festival too.
The Onion’s A.V. Club just announced that they’re holding their own music festival. They’re calling it A.V. Fest and, true to their ethos, they seem to have slapped the plan together over the weekend:
We hope to see you there. I’m going to try and convince my co-workers to have a “nerding booth,” which is like a kissing booth, but you get to come nerd out with us instead.
The announcement mentions a 12 band line-up, including Archers of Loaf, Tokyo Police Club and Eef Barzelay (of Clem Snide) playing the music of Journey. If I were Texan, I’d be all over this.
Divas, Why?
Just got back from an “Employee appreciation” event we planned at 3:00 this afternoon. The guys were playing “Pop a Shot” (basketball hoops), and some video shoot-em-up, and that shuffleboardy thingy with corn meal looking stuff the lubricant to allow the disks to move. I had a couple cocktails (well maybe four) and started talking to a small group of us about Liza Minelli.
