R.I.P. Cy Twombly (1928-2011)
Cy Twombly, whose spare child-like scribbles and poetic engagement with antiquity left him stubbornly out of step with the movements of post-war American art even as he became one of the era’s most important painters, died in Rome Tuesday. He was 83.

Thank you for posting this, Sheila. Another reason to visit Houston.
Or go to the Dulwich Gallery in London.
Oh, no. Not today. I don’t want Cy Twombly to be dead.
The first thing I thought of was Derek’s post about the auguries and the Roman storms.
Cindy I had the exact same response.
Please, not today. Not today. I just can’t.
I said to Cindy that people can talk all they like about artistic immortality, but sometimes when an artist departs there is a void left behind.
Let’s talk about artistic immorality.
Is there such a thing?
Wait. Somebody asked. And some people answered.
I should remember things like this.
I’m having a really hard time getting through this day. I just can’t stop crying.
Sad, i wonder if he died in Rome, i know he’s been living here. You can see it in his work.
Yes, Derek. He did die in Rome. Today, Tuesday, according to reports. Which is why I thought instantly of your post.
I guess i should read the link. It was a strange day in Rome today for sure. Around 9 am the sky darkened like there was an eclipse, that’s when i went up and took those photos.
Whew.
We had a Twombly at Saks in Minneapolis. Sometimes, when I got hot under the collar for some reason, I would go stand in front of it and let the lines of loopings draw me in. It calmed me. I’m sad to hear of his passing.
“We had a Twombly at Saks.” Rick, I love you all up.
