cars I’d buy, classic, vol 1.1

1972 Chevy C-10

Michael’s post reminded me I forgot the 1972 Chevy C-10. My ex-brother-in-law’s step father had a couple of these — one blue and cream, one orange and cream — nicely restored, and although I’ve always been more a Ford man, once I opened my eyes, I had to set that aside. Chevy got the second generation C/Ks right. (Of course, I want mine with classic wheels, but this was the best picture I could find.)

That’s kool, Deron; I had a ’71 C-10 when I was about nineteen or twenty. It was my third vehicle, and the first one that required a loan. My dad co-signed.

Already almost ten years old when I bought it, the truck was super-solid. The C-10 in your image has probably been modified, because that style of truck was known for its gas filler cap between the door and the bed, near the top. The gas tank was behind the bench seat. You could hear fuel sloshing around back there. “Clever Chevrolet,” I thought, “putting the tank inside the strongest part of the truck, the cab.” Years later I saw the videos of these same trucks being launched off of ramps by the NHTSA to tip them over sideways. The cap would shear off and fuel would spray everywhere and then ignite. Yikes.

That didn’t happen to me. Mine was parked behind my place of employment and some uninsured kid in a hopped-up Chevelle hit it at about twice the speed of sound. He nailed my truck so hard, that it was pushed up over the curb and onto the sidewalk. I took my insurance company’s money and bought a 1975 Chevy truck but it was a piece of shit compared to my ’71.
