How To

I tied a tie after consulting You Tube. My efforts were acceptable, even though I did not master the Full Windsor.

I said I needed a photo before he took off to the pre-party. He was grumpy. “But why? You got a picture before I went to last year’s winter formal.”

    All grown up!

    Only clothing-wise, Deron.

Yes, it’s characteristic of our gender.

Unless you know what you’re doing, aways use the four-in-hand knot when tying a tie.

  5. Carole Corlew on November 10th, 2011 at 8:35 pm

That’s the one, Nick. There are a bajillion how-to-tie videos on You Tube. But I liked tieatie, best. He gave the best instructions, including the all important “form a bridge with your other hand” to make sure there was room for the front loop-dealio.

    Thank goodness for You Tube.

My rules are, the wider the spread of the shirt-collar, the wider the knot. Longer “throat” of the jacket, narrower the tie. It’s about the expanse of fabric shown in the tie. If the throat of the jacket is short (say in a three-button suit) a wider tie is most appropriate. If the throat is long, narrower is better.

I’m full of crap, y’all. Do what feels right. Send pictures, I’ll critique.

Don’t get me started on patterns.

My mom used to work at a tie shop when she was in high school. She taught me how to tie a tie when I went through a dressing like Holden Caufield stage in middle school. I never mastered a Full Windsor.

A “full Windsor” takes me several tries. I can do one. It requires starting the tie at the right place. It can’t be done at the usual one-thirds/ two-thirds place.

Do you know all the scarf tying techniques? I tried a few, and I just can’t get it to work on my head. I’ve got a Pucci scarf that I feel I can wear as a turban. I’ve settled for a lady ascot look with it.

I can never remember how to do a four-in-hand, though I’ve looked it up countless times. I always end up with a Half Windsor, which is ok I guess. My full Windsors leave me with a tiny stub at one end, but I don’t think 16.5 inches is that much of a neck.

Today I was looking for alternate scarf-tying methods on the way home. Looking for something with a little more oomph. Let me know what you’ve got.

  12. Carole Corlew on November 10th, 2011 at 9:23 pm

Rick! I like the rules. I’m writing them down. The Iowan promises an instruct, but then can’t get home and I’m at the computer on You Tube again. Those two are both so wiggly I can’t imagine. I’ll have to video them! A couple of weeks ago, Mr. B. was trying to run out the door while I was finishing the hem of his tux slacks. Because he brought me that tux about an hour before he needed it. Duh.

Erica, there were several women giving You Tube how to tieties. You should add yours!

  13. Rick Neece on November 10th, 2011 at 9:25 pm

Casey, the stub at the end of my full-windsors is a little bigger than tiny. I share your neck size.

  14. Casey Cichowicz on November 10th, 2011 at 9:29 pm

Thanks Rick. I often have trouble getting the stub into the keeper. Especially after a few drinks.

  15. Rick Neece on November 10th, 2011 at 9:34 pm

Cece, I love it you’re trying to make it right for them.

Thanks for the tip, Carole! You saved me a trip to France. Next time I see Rick, I’ll wear my scarf turban. I’ll know it’s good if it meets his approval. Casey, I’ve got at least three ways to wear a winter scarf. Maybe I’ll make some demo videos…

Man, the things I miss when I get stuck working late.

Gotta be honest, I use a four-in-hand almost exclusively out of simplicity and familiarity. I’ve been known to tie a full windsor for a good wedding, but I’d usually just as soon skip it as wear a tie at all.

Should I go to the trouble of a full windsor for you, consider it a compliment.

  18. Carole Corlew on November 12th, 2011 at 7:07 am

Dave, who taught you to tie a tie? Erica, I don’t know. I think you and your scarf should go to France anyway. It has been a long time but for some reason I finally have that itch again.

  19. Rick Neece on November 12th, 2011 at 5:26 pm

Somehow, it seems to me no one, these days, should be using button-down collars with a tie.

    Non-sequiter?

We just watched “Margin Call.” Jeremy Irons’s shirt and tie?

    Didn’t work.

    Watch for the ties, tyings.

  20. Rick Neece on November 12th, 2011 at 5:30 pm

Attention to detail? Dimple? No dimple? I’m just sayin’.

God help me how I see these things.

  21. Rick Neece on November 12th, 2011 at 8:32 pm

D’you think there is someone tying ties on actors in movies? (Or on CNN?) Or do the actors tie them themselves? That might account for the inconsistencies.

Amae? If you ever need someone on set to tie ties, I can make sure they’re perfectly done, scene to scene. If it’s within the character’s character that they be imperfect, I can do that too.

    I’m seeing a niche.

  22. Rick Neece on November 12th, 2011 at 8:33 pm

There’s certainly no faggot paying attention, ‘cept me.

  23. Rick Neece on November 12th, 2011 at 8:51 pm

Branding tag-line? “Wear your tie with confidence, mother-fucker.”

  24. Rick Neece on November 12th, 2011 at 8:53 pm

Aw, heck. Who gives a shit?

  25. Carole Corlew on November 12th, 2011 at 10:49 pm

The tie person would be wardrobe, right? But maybe in a classy, suit-dense movie a tie man would be needed. And you would be exactly the man. Rick. Get your tieatie videos on You Tube! There are hordes already there. It just dawned on me, they are auditioning for YOUR position!!!

  26. Carole Corlew on November 12th, 2011 at 10:51 pm

But what do you do with those button down collars?????

  27. Rick Neece on November 13th, 2011 at 6:08 am

Button downs should be worn unironed, cuffs turned up, untucked, collar-points unbuttoned. Jeans or khakis (also unironed with the cuffs rolled up a turn or two. No socks. Oxford shoes or loafers (penny not boat), preferably scuffed and worn.

Fall into winter for dress-up, pull a $1200 Ralph Lauren black cashmere sweater over. Leave the shirt-tail sticking out.

  28. Amanda Mae Meyncke on November 13th, 2011 at 1:36 pm

Rick, I’ve been working Wardrobe lately and the wardrobe person would be responsible for tying a tie. I should learn.
