Best Blogs of 2011

I was very privileged to be asked to contribute to this year’s Bygone Bureau list alongside some very fine bloggers. Worth a read, even if I cheated.

    Very nicely done.

The editors did a great job making me look smarter, too. Honestly, it was nicely done all around.

I thought Stellar Interesting was curated by Kottke, I didn’t get the impression it was a feed of the most faved items.

It’s an old tweet, but here’s where I got my info on Stellar Interesting.

That must have been his original intention for the account. Oftentimes there are only a handful of other people who have starred an Interesting item so someone’s gotta be picking them.

I don’t know how the “Also liked” function works exactly, but I am not so sure we get all the information. He definitely means to be imprecise, I think: “and a couple/bunches more,” etc.

Of course, I can’t really say for certain.

Of the most recent 40 items liked on the Interesting feed, 10 of them have no “and X more”, just the 8 people (or less) individually named. By any defintion, not popular items.

Obv I don’t know how it works either but popularity doesn’t seem to be the driving factor.

More importantly, Google needs to get their shit together and develop a read/write API for Google+ so that I can get all these things I’ve been plussing out of my G+ shoebox and into Stellar.

The Interesting acct on Stellar is entirely algorithm-determined with different thresholds for different types of items. It’s not that complicated and that it works as well as it does is a minor miracle. That the site is largely centered around one person (me) and his network is probably why, so it won’t work forever.

    Thanks for the clarification, Jason.

    Ah, that makes sense. Neat!

I wrote for this thing, too, although if I’d known that it was going to include disreputables like Andrew and Gavin Craig and whatnot, I would have totally flaked out on my assignment even way more than I really did. (I had to be repeatedly poked and re-poked. I’m bad at this stuff.)

Tim, join me in a chorus of damn you, Simone!

I am still bitter about this:

It’s so weird, like, my, like, Matthew Grey Gubler photo-tumblr isn’t anywhere on that list? Like… I just… oversight, I guess.
