Also: when a teenager, a friend and former boss worked for a laundry service that tended to whorehouses near East St. Louis. Collecting sheets and loading them into a truck. Told me his mother was unclear as to his work but happy he had a job. To me, years after: “There are few things sadder than a whorehouse at 9:00 am.”
