The brains of children raised in violent families resemble the brains of soldiers exposed to combat, psychologists say.
The Sword Maker
Korehira Watanabe is one of the last remaining Japanese swordsmiths. He has spent 40 years honing his craft in an attempt to recreate Koto, a type of sword that dates back to the Heian and Kamakura periods (794-1333 AD). No documents remain to provide context for Watanabe’s quest, but he believes he has come close to creating a replica of this mythical samurai sword.

Hudson Bay inspired blanket
I am knitting this.
If I like it in its small form, I will also knit a much larger version. Almost everything I knit becomes a gift*, and every time I visit Deron and Amy I am reminded how special it is to surround yourself with your own creations. Thanks for the inspiration, friends.
* I get to keep the holey, mismeasured projects.
Adrian Younge, 1969 Organ
Adrian Younge did the soundtrack for the blaxploitation spoof Black Dynamite. “1969 Organ” is from Venice Dawn, his soundtrack for a non-existent film.
When it surfaced in 2000, Venice Dawn appeared to be the music from a lost 1969 Italian film, but don’t bother looking for it on Netflix.
Love. It.

Miguel Endara, Hero
Watch as Miguel Endara draws a portrait of his father by meticulously tapping out millions and millions of dots. Like 2 Years & +200,000 Jelly Beans, this really made me itch.

Reflections on a Respiratory Infection
I coughed so long. I coughed so hard. Deron asked, “How are your ribs?” “Not as good as the ones at Hardeman’s,” I said. Not nearly so good as the gas station tacos at the Sylvan Avenue Valero’s either.
And I wanted to do what the mother of my long-time friend Melanie did when Melanie was little and had a bad cold and a dripping nose. Melanie’s mom took one of those tiny paper baskets they put Jordan almonds in at weddings and attached a string loop to it, then taped the string to the bridge of Melanie’s nose and made a drip bucket so Melanie would no longer have to blow her nose raw.

Cain Suspends Campaign
It’s official, Herman Cain has suspended his campaign. And he certainly picked an interesting opportunity to make the announcement:
The announcement, originally slated as the opening of his campaign’s Georgia office, featured barbecue, a blues band, and Tea Party movement supporters in colonial costumes, The Times reported.
Too bad. I suspect he would have truly shown brightly in the upcoming Trump-moderated Republican debate.

When righteousness withers away and evil rules the land, we come into being, age after age, and take visible shape, and move, a man among men, for the protection of good, thrusting back evil and setting virtue on her seat again.

No one has done more to illuminate the relationship between fossils and mythmaking than Adrienne Mayor, who has documented hundreds of instances during the last two thousand five hundred years when fossil bones provided the scaffolding for elaborate mythmaking, as frightened people sought to give meaning to the startling animal remains they happened across.
