On not qualifying for the Three Stooges 2012 studio screening

At first my long-time friend was offended on learning that he was too old to enjoy the new Three Stooges focus screening. Then he realized that apparently promoters of the new Stooges film are not targeting people 15-29 either.

“Why, I oughtta . . . !” he sez.

Thanks for participating with The Screening Exchange! We’d like to invite you to a screening in your area of the upcoming feature film, The Three Stooges.

This invitation is for kids and adults between the ages of 10-14 and 30-49, respectively. Unfortunately, we cannot admit anyone to this screening that is outside of this criteria.

For a description of The Three Stooges, as well as its MPAA rating status, please see below. Thank you for participating with The Screening Exchange, and we hope to see you at the movie theater!

Left on a nun’s doorstep, Larry, Curly and Moe grow up finger-poking, nyuk-nyuking and woo-woo-wooing their way to uncharted levels of knuckleheaded misadventure. Out to save their childhood home, only The Three Stooges could become embroiled in an oddball murder plot . . . while also stumbling into starring in a phenomenally successful TV reality show.

The Three Stooges stars Sean Hayes (TV’s Will and Grace), Will Sasso (TV’s $#*! My Dad Says), Chris Diamantopoulos (TV’s 24), Jane Lynch (TV’s Glee), Jennifer Hudson (Dream Girls), Sofia Vergara (TV’s Modern Family), Craig Bierko (TV’s The Change Up), Stephen Collins (TV’s No Ordinary Family), and Larry David (TV’s Curb Your Enthusiasm).

I LOVE the three stooges. But I suspect their form of humor is generational and the marketers are trying to key into that. They’re splitting their bet between the probable goal, old dudes like me in their 30s and 40s, and the highly improbable goal, the young.

But in a world where you have a MILLION real idiots ACTUALLY hitting each other in the head with hammers on youtube, is it possible for the silliness of The Three Stooges to entice the young? I wouldn’t bet on it, unless I got better than 23:1 odds. Some comedy IS generational, like The Marx Brothers, and rebooting doesn’t always restart the profit engine.
