clusterflock update update

Okay, people. Tonight at 8 CST Patrick, Chris, and Andrew are going to begin the site upgrade. They will be integrating Chris's delicious new design, shifting us over to WordPress, and making sure all the old content, comments, and links work just like before. I'm sure Patrick will have more instructions for us, but as of now, that's what I know. Carry on.

Shatner: Details Interview

Q: You’ve shown more depth in these ten minutes than I’ve ever seen you express on television.
A: People don’t care about depth on television. The lighter you can keep things the better. People don’t care about real issues unless those issues are entertaining.

A Lesson in Self-Deprecation

Pearl: I made some coffee but it's not very good. You all want some?

Daryl: Well, I don't want to be any trouble to you.

Pearl: Oh no, it's no trouble. I'm just glad I remembered to make some--I forget everything these days.

Daryl: Well are you going to have some?

Pearl: I think I will. I might need it if I eat any of these old cookies I made. They're burnt--and the recipe called for honey but all I had was a buncha packets of sweet-n-low. Y'all want some?

Daryl: Oh I'm sure they're good. A lot better than if I'd tried to make them.

Cindy: What the Fuck is the matter with you people?

Is the spirit willing?

Most of us, I imagine, grew up with the Bible verse, "The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak," somewhere in our heads. I don't even want to dip into the many exegetical possibilities for this verse, some of which are diametrically opposed to one another, and even what I take to be a most obvious explanation--the dualistic one of two intelligences, spiritual and physical--actually seems a too casual mislabeling of two intelligences, one good, one evil. But I'd like to suggest that what may really be happening here is an examination of consciousness versus unconsciousness or, if you will, the human versus the animal mind. Living in the "spirit", in this sense, would be a thinkier thing to do, requiring a more concentrated effort; it's easier to live instinctually, reacting rather than pondering before acting. Manicheism, then, is not a belief in a good God and an evil God--a Father and a Devil--but rather a way of elaborating the difficulties of humanity moving out of the animal psyche and into a truly human psyche which demands a full-on embrace of thought.

To Collaborate, or Not to Collaborate

I was recently talking to a designer about different experiences and scenarios regarding working environments, and specifically about the notion of collaboration between designers, creative directors and the work itself. Being a control freak – or, more realistically, lacking the patience and/or tolerance to deal with anyone that does things differently than me – I related that my best experience so far had been at Pentagram with Michael Bierut, where the burden of each project, from concept to completion, was solely on me as the lead designer, with the flexibility of pulling in an intern or asking one of the other designers to pitch in with ideas or certain executions — something I rarely did, again, see above. But besides my “issues” I found this independence and responsibility to be far more efficient and rewarding, specially compared to past experiences where too many designers were working on the same project at the same time.

link (swissmiss)
