it’s all full of radiation
We have contaminated the atmosphere with trace amounts of radioactivity with detonations of atom bombs starting in 1945 and that contamination risks our ability to build sensors to detect this same, small amount of radiation.
All steel made since the detonation of the first atom bomb in 1945 has contained tiny amounts of radioactivity. This is because the atmosphere now contains trace amounts of radioactivity. The steelmaking process involves the use of large amounts of air, which transfers the radioactivity to the steel. Instruments and equipment used for measuring radioactivity must be free from extra background radiation, so post-1945 “new” steel cannot be used for these purposes. Instead, pre-1945 “clean” steel is used.

Hitler without moustache

The picture depicts two versions of a photograph of Adolf Hitler that was retouched by an artist of the United States Secret Service in 1944 in order to show how a fugitive Hitler may disguise himself in order to escape capture after Germany’s (then imminent) defeat. Since Hitler’s death was not a certainty in 1945 the pictures were posted up all over Germany in the summer of 1945 to ease finding the (potentially) “fugitive” and camouflaged dictator.

Foursquare is the spiritual successor to the recently sunsetted dodgeball. By incorporating gameplay elements into your social life and allowing friends to share to-dos and recommendations of awesome things to do in their city.
It’s foursquare! Think: 50% friend-finder, 30% social cityguide, 20% nightlife game. We wanted to build something that not only helps you keep up with your friends, but exposes you to new things in and challenges you to explore cities in different ways. There’s a lot of experimenting here, so bear with us as we try to figure it all out (and thanks!)

Man on Wire
Two years before I was born Phillipe Petit walked a wire between the two towers of the World Trade Center. My father looked up from his coffee through his kitchen window to see the silhouette of a man suspended between the towers. In New York tonight is the premiere of the movie, Man on Wire, about Phillipe Petit and his unbelievable 45 minutes spent in the void.
Well, yes and no. Of course the very first step, as you can imagine, was a giant first step. But a few moments during those crossings I remember perfectly. But that first step was a giant moment for me: I was finally stepping in to my dream. So I remember that vividly. And at some point I stopped on the wire and I sat down, and I looked down all the way – a 1/4 mile to the empty plaza below – and I stopped and saw the crowd gathering around that plaza. Yes, I remember very well many, many moments in those 45 minutes.

Work from Jim Denevan
one of his more recent pieces has been dubbed the ‘largest freehand drawing in the world’ and it certainly is big at 3 miles (4.8km) across! the circular work took 100 (160km) miles / eight days of walking to complete and was washed away in a rainstorm the next week.

Autobahn Pirates
Pick-pocketing a truck at 60mph in the dark-
In the nighttime darkness, with their lights off, the men drove up behind a transport truck.
Once in place, one man climbed onto the hood of his own car, then used a bolt cutter to break a lock on the trailer door before heaving it open and climbing inside. He then handed boxes of electronics back to a second man on the car hood, who loaded them into the thieves’ vehicle, Radecke said.
A second car blocked the left lane during the operation to prevent other cars from pulling too close, he said.
Because both cars had their headlights off, Radecke said, the truck driver never noticed he was being robbed.
Younger than John McCain
As Presidential candidate McCain’s age, 72 on election day, seems to be a persistent topic in the media, it might be a good idea for you to know how old he is in comparison to other stuff that most of us think is pretty old.
The following things are younger than Mr. McCain
- Golden Gate bridge
- Plutonium
- FM radio
- Keith Richards

Olinda

Olinda is a prototype digital radio that has your social network built in, showing you the stations your friends are listening to. It’s customisable with modular hardware, and aims to provoke discussion on the future and design of radios for the home.
Borrowing from the social aspects of the web (how people consume, share and react to media on the internet) as well as the interchangeability of data via APIs (the radio has a hardware API) and the understanding of a strong product ecosystem (iPod) Olinda is poised to open a multitude of discussions. As consumer electronics get smarts we can look forward to some of the interactions we expect from the web and highly specialized devices to move down to our simpler gadgets, like radios.
Olinda was created by Shultze & Webb for BBC Audio & Music Interactive R&D.
