We have contaminated the atmosphere with trace amounts of radioactivity with detonations of atom bombs starting in 1945 and that contamination risks our ability to build sensors to detect this same, small amount of radiation.

All steel made since the detonation of the first atom bomb in 1945 has contained tiny amounts of radioactivity. This is because the atmosphere now contains trace amounts of radioactivity. The steelmaking process involves the use of large amounts of air, which transfers the radioactivity to the steel. Instruments and equipment used for measuring radioactivity must be free from extra background radiation, so post-1945 “new” steel cannot be used for these purposes. Instead, pre-1945 “clean” steel is used.

The picture depicts two versions of a photograph of Adolf Hitler that was retouched by an artist of the United States Secret Service in 1944 in order to show how a fugitive Hitler may disguise himself in order to escape capture after Germany’s (then imminent) defeat. Since Hitler’s death was not a certainty in 1945 the pictures were posted up all over Germany in the summer of 1945 to ease finding the (potentially) “fugitive” and camouflaged dictator.

Two years before I was born Phillipe Petit walked a wire between the two towers of the World Trade Center. My father looked up from his coffee through his kitchen window to see the silhouette of a man suspended between the towers. In New York tonight is the premiere of the movie, Man on Wire, about Phillipe Petit and his unbelievable 45 minutes spent in the void.

Well, yes and no. Of course the very first step, as you can imagine, was a giant first step. But a few moments during those crossings I remember perfectly. But that first step was a giant moment for me: I was finally stepping in to my dream. So I remember that vividly. And at some point I stopped on the wire and I sat down, and I looked down all the way – a 1/4 mile to the empty plaza below – and I stopped and saw the crowd gathering around that plaza. Yes, I remember very well many, many moments in those 45 minutes.
