Table

It took three times longer than I wanted it to, but the table is finally put together. I put the last coat of oil on it tonight, and once that dries, I’ll put the wax on and let the stink dissipate. I intended to stabilize the end pieces with some brass bolts, but the table glued together very solidly, and I’m not sure those will be necessary, so once I have a chance to live with it, I can see what I think.

The original legs weren’t sturdy enough, so I had to recalibrate halfway through. It’s essentially the same design but the legs are double-thickness now, with a layer of 1/4″ MDF between. The top is particleboard glued to 3/4″ plywood, with red oak supports underneath. The legs are red oak and MDF, rounded at the corners. I used walnut stain, and teak oil, and will finish with carnauba wax.

It’s a puzzle

I started building a diningroom/work- table over the weekend. Tomorrow I’ll start sanding and finishing. Here are the various pieces — not necessarily in order — and obviously upside down.

Kenneth Barry, Lunar Coffee Table

Three years ago, Kenneth Barry was just an IT guy at a cabinet shop. But when his boss asked him to help the company go paperless, he went further, assembling a machine to automate what most woodworkers were doing by hand. His first CNC router was a crude hack, its design cribbed from somebody’s website, its frame cobbled together from a pile of plastic bathroom partitions. But it allowed the twentysomething dad to make his own custom furniture with just a few keystrokes. Soon he hit on a way to combine his 3-D modeling skills with one of his hobbies, the online strategy game Spring. His CNC, he realized, could take one of the game’s “heightmaps,” which hold the geospatial data for each level, and render it as a relief map in wood. His first attempt was uneven and choppy, so for his second he went all out and built a new router, knocking down a wall in his garage to accommodate the 10- by 8-foot beast. The mission was a success, landing him a one-of-a-kind coffee table with an eerie lunar surface.

And with competition from other companies, American Standard has no problem demonstrating the punch of its products, even on smart phones.

Fifty-six chicken nuggets? No problem for these crappers. Water wigglers? You bet.

I remember watching Jack Lalanne when I was a little kid and TVs looked like furniture. He was great. When he talked with his hands, it was like he was picking up heavy shit with ease.

Dear Clusterflock,

What is this thing?

It’s for sale at The Cure, an East Village thrift store, but nobody seems to know what it is. Suggestions include

  • a samovar
  • a microwave from ancient Egypt
  • a very, very old fashioned water cooler
  • the top half of Lady Gaga’s next outfit
  • a Dalek incubator
  • a charcoal grill

Other notable items from among The Cure’s offerings include Ellen and Arthur’s lovely wedding album, a vintage Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fanny pack, a drag-queen-sized excellent silver gown, a cool little bookcase, and this, for Cindy.
